Next talk
!U3ACommunities Computing Next months talk on u3acommunities computing group will be about open source software I'm thinking.
Any suggestions what to include ? So far I've got :
* Software build process and what gets shipped
* Some examples & popularity of open source projects
* Pros & cons
* What "free" might mean & licences
* Source code control, and especially what is a "fork"
* Getting help
* Building and contributing
* Funding & donations

I'm aiming for "being aware of open source projects" really.
Forking I wanted to mention just because you see the term so much ( eg star office forked to open office forked to libre office etc ).

in reply to Peter Lord • •Oh I see. I think then that the section "Building and Contributing" should be split into two separate sections.
To use open-source software, one can download and install the installation file, or download the source and build it yourself.
Contributing is much more involved, like installing the development ide and the necessary libraries, source code control, pull requests etc etc
