Volunteering at Boomtown !

Its been a tough year ... 3 parental funerals/probates to work through (my father + both my wifes parents) so not able to do as much festival volunteering as I would have liked.

But, next week its volunteering at boomtown ! (then, soon after, shambala)

Sometimes I think festivals are a bit like wizard of oz ... day-to-day life is black and white and when you get to a festival its all in colour 😀. Oddly, I'm not into music that much but I do really appreciate the art, performances and the general madness!

Will be busy, lots and lots of walking, but if nothing else, something different.

Are there any fediverse groups for UK festivals ? I did create festivals@u3a.social (which re-posts news found via RSS) but it feels a bit of a hack. Somewhat surprised that ethical festivals stick to non-ethical social media.

The scariest thing about new #AgeVerification laws being introduced in Europe (France, I was expecting more from you) is to see the positive reactions of my family members, who have fallen hook, line and sinker for the arguments discussed in the media. "It's to protect the children!" No it isn't.

I'm sending this superb article by the @eff to all of them:

This graph should be front page news.

Instead, there is silence.

This is not a projection, not a prediction, not the result of a model.

These are measurements, it is what is happening.

Olilo

Now up and running on #olilo on #cityfibre . Had a testing false alarm (due to my fail2ban) but I belive all is well. Email flowing and u3a.social working well.

Just need to sort the ipv6 reverse DNS.

olilo

Just signed up to new ISP olilo, olilo.co.uk ... unusually they are an ISP for techies (one feature I'm missing with toob is the ability to configure reverse DNS).

Since I'm already on City Fibre, I'm expecting the switch over to be fairly seemless (although no doubt there will be a down time for u3a.social, email etc).

I'll add to plord.co.uk/blog/isps/ after a few months.

We’re testing Mastodon’s Collections feature to make it easier to suggest accounts to follow based on specific topics.

However, many of the accounts we wanted to include in the collection are on servers that either don't offer this feature, or where account discovery isn't enabled in the settings. Unfortunately, this means that many accounts still cannot be included.

Nevertheless, here is our first collection, featuring European tech companies in the Fediverse, including email providers, search engines, cloud hosting, hardware, etc.

What the fuck?!

What appears to be an AI chatbot just replied to a seriously emotional post of mine seconds after I posted it with a bunch of AI-generated nonsense (that, to add insult to injury, even directly contradicts what I said).

Is this seriously a thing now?? The profile in question claims to be a licenced therapist. The post history is full of obviously AI generated sugary-sweet unsolicited 'advice' to people on public posts.

Is this a scam tactic or a harassment thing? I'm genuinely confused.

I very, very rarely use the hashtag #FediBlock but this is genuinely disturbing.

I'm just wondering what their end goal is here. Like, they didn't try to get me into their DMs, send me a malicious link or anything; and it's not quite enough to be a deliberate harassment bot because it appears like milquetoast nonsense encouragement talk without substance, like most therapists actually give.

I'm coming to the conclusion that community-owned and operated small clouds (co-ops) with easy onramps for self-hosting open source services like mail, storage, and VPN are the only way forward. Every corpo service is eventually going to make you ashamed to use it.

there are so many businesses that make more sense as a coop (or even a network of coops) than as a Silicon Valley style startup. The one I want to try and get going someday is grocery delivery from locally owned stores, owned by a coop of the stores, the delivery drivers, and the team building the ordering infrastructure.

So ... Jimmy Walsh (wikipedia) really good (also many others). Picked up a copy of his book which I'll read soon.

Claire Coutinho (shadow secretary of state) very garbled I thought. Guy next to me, who works in natwest funds was actually laughing.

Announcements included octopus home batteries and HGV battery swaps.

UK social media ban

Just been reading up on the proposed UK social media ban for under 16's.

As far as I can tell, this means that these companies (mostly US based of course) will need to gather id's from all users (likely passport, credit card, driving licence etc) ... such data has already been hacked in the Australian age verification checks (theguardian.com/media/2025/oct…).

I would seriously recommend to NEVER share such personal id's to such untrusted sites (government / trusted financial companies is about it).

So when the ban comes in, either stop using them or ask a child how to get around the age checks.

May solar

Later than normal ... so much going on at the moment.

May was a sunny month, although I'm now on new Octopus tariffs so export is now only 12p/kWh and overnight import 3.99p/kWh. Still, over 12months I'm still earning a little (after powering house, hot water and car charging).

ASI

Apparently steps towards Artifical Super Intelligence (ASI) has started. See lifearchitect.ai/asi/

Meanwhile, Google search (which I rarely use these days) is still returning incorrect AI summaries, more and more informational web sites are looking the same and energy consumption is rising. Sigh.

I still find myself simply not wanting this stuff (aside for demos in AI talks).

Agentic Artificial Intelligence

19th May @ 3:00pm – 5:00pm

This month we’ll look at agentic artificial intelligence … large language models are now no-longer contrained to just “chat”, they can now interface to the outside world to perform tasks. We’ll take a look at a couple of tools (opencode and openclaw), how they work and risks involved.

As always, plenty of time is reserved for discussions.

Joining details will be emailed to subscribers. If you aren’t a member, it’s free to join here u3acommunities.org/subscribe-t….

we joke that when the AI bubble pops and the managers can't afford the chatbot any more, the surviving companies will hire the people who know how shit works to clean up

but this is of course optimistic. observed behaviour is that they will instead do the stupidest and shortest-term thing they can do instead of ever doing it properly.

so what do you envision this might be?

for clarity, i think when the AI bubble pops, which I place as some time next year at the latest - and you can hear the screeching noises in 2026 - the current recession signs will turn into a full Great Depression 2, so those surviving companies will also be doing not so great

Most academic economic pundits treat this bubble like the dot com or Railroad mania bubble, even though it’s more like Enron with a touch of GFC.

They are thinking that after a crash, there’ll be all this infrastructure laying around like the aftermath of dotcom.

Railroad and fiber optic infrastructure last something like 30 years. Data center components last 1 to 3.

There is no there, there for whatever survivors to swing in and pick up infrastructure for pennies on the dollar

Something for the dancers 🌿

@anexperience_presents return to the Garden for their second year on the land - bringing an intergenerational live music and soundsystem festival built by a group of friends who simply love to dance.

9 stages. An on-site boozer. All kinds of music. Nice people. And soundsystems that’ll make your trousers flap.

No big claims - just a proper party, done right.

Sunny April

In April, we easily exported more than we consumed ... long may it continue ! Now averaging £-1.88 / month for electricity (house + hot water + car charging).

Overnight electricity now at 3.9p/kWh fixed for 1 year (a bit of luck, got that just before the US/Iran war) ... new customers get 8p/kWh now.

March solar update

Lots of sun this month so getting close to switching between paying for electricty and earning. Overall, on average, earning £1.82 per month (so free electricty, hotwater, car charging and still make a little profit).

Next month overnight rates drop to 3.5p/kWh but the tariff expires so I'll be moving to the new octopus intelligent go plan.

Hyundai servicing

I've had my #Hyundai #Kona #ElectricCar now for nearly 8 years ... the local #Edens service center still don't know the difference between state of charge and state of health. They reguarly report the SOC as battery health.

Unbelievable ... especially as the high voltage battery is getting close to end of warrenty.

I've measured #SOH myself, of course, both with an app and by keeping track of charges. Still at 100%. But I really want #Hyundai to be regularly measuring these things.

But good news, the service report still reports that my (non existant) exhaust is fine !

U3ACommunities emails & Microsoft Outlook

In todays toalk there was a question about Microsoft Outlook not displaying mailpoet emails from U3ACommunities.

I just installed it on my mac ... seems to work.

Mind you, plenty of reports about it not working (kb.mailpoet.com/article/186-kn…) ... seems some versions of Outlook use word to render the page.

I guess if you see issue, consider upgrading your client or click on the view in a browser button.
