How might medicine become more targeted, more precise and less invasive? Professor Eleanor Stride, Professor of Biomaterials at Oxford, is working at the fascinating boundary between engineering and medicine. Her team designs microscopic drug-delivery systems and uses ultrasound and magnetic fields to guide and activate them. The aim is to get more treatment to the place it is needed, while reducing exposure elsewhere in the body. Her research has applications ranging from cancer therapy and difficult infections to fracture healing. This promises an absorbing glimpse into some of the technologies that could shape the future of healthcare.

In today’s world, where many of our traditionally labour-intensive industrial work-places are being transformed by modern technologies, we are relying increasingly on computerised systems to keep everything running smoothly. But the drive towards automation places a heavy burden on those who design these systems, to ensure that every stage in the process is controlled and monitored with the utmost precision. So for this month’s meeting, we are pleased to welcome retired electronic engineer Tony Willcox (Arun East u3a) who spent 30 years doing just that, all around the world, to give us the lowdown on how it all works, with a particular focus on the manufacture of steel.

Unfortunately, Dr Emma Chapman has been taken ill and is unable to give her planned presentation.

We are very pleased, however, that Professor Milton Mermikides, will be joining us instead on Monday 26th October at 3 pm, with his presentation The Music of Light and Colour.

Speaker: Professor Milton Mermikides
[strong] Professor of Music, University of Surrey and Gresham Professor of Music [/strong]

The colours of a rainbow and the notes of a musical scale may seem worlds apart. Yet both can be explored through patterns, frequencies and relationships. Professor Milton Mermikides examines the science behind light and colour, the physical nature of sound, and the remarkable ways our senses interpret these different forms of information. Beginning with Newton’s investigations into the spectrum, he follows attempts to connect colour with musical pitch and explores how technology can transform visual images into sound. Join us for a stimulating journey across physics, music, neuroscience and the science of perception.

And in industries as diverse as transport, manufacturing, construction and waste disposal, this instant and precisely controllable source of power, generated by a pressurised liquid in a confined space, continues to shape the modern world. In this light-hearted presentation, guest speaker Steve Skinner, with the aid of some eye-catching animations, will reveal some of its many applications, past and present. From the familiarity of London’s iconic Tower Bridge to the surreal alternative reality of taking 700 intrepid Victorians on a simulated sea voyage in the centre of Paris, hydraulic fluid power has been one of our most versatile technologies, and remains so today.

As our long, hot summer finally comes to an end, so too has the honeymoon period for the new PM, as he confronts all those thorny issues which bedevilled his predecessors, and still remain unresolved. And one of the most intractable is the crisis in Britain’s criminal justice system, as exemplified most recently in our prisons where, not for the first time, inmates are having to be released early because of overcrowding. Quite apart from the trauma it evokes in their victims – not to mention the burden it places on the probation system – the exercise is largely futile, because the stubbornly-high reoffending rate only adds further pressure to our already-stretched judicial system. Little wonder, then, that new cases are taking ever longer to come to court – even the controversial proposal to axe some jury trials wouldn’t even scratch the surface of this long-standing problem. Is it time, then, to completely rethink our approach, by considering alternatives to locking up ever more of our fellow citizens? There’s a lot to talk about, so why not join us for an hour of lively discussion on these important issues!

We were saddened to hear of the sudden death of Mo Brown. For many years Mo was an inspirational and energetic member of Newcastle u3a, and supported u3a activities regionally and nationally. Chair of Northumbria u3a for three years and a proof reader for the Trust. Our thoughts are with her family and her u3a friends.

Sharing memories of Mo

"Mo was a valued member and great advocate of the u3a movement. Her knowledge and expertise will be hugely missed. She was a mentor and friend to many."
Jean Cubbin, former Regional Trustee for the North East

"Mo was for many Northumbria u3a (now u3a North East Region). She embodied all that it stood for and the strap line Learn, Laugh, Live surely described her well. A great teacher with an amazing memory, her wisdom, patience and kindness are legendary. She is already missed but her memory will live long through the help and advice she willingly offered."

Few would argue that the discovery of penicillin, and the antibiotics revolution that followed, was one of the most far-reaching breakthroughs of twentieth-century medical science. But infection treatment itself has a much longer pedigree, stretching back hundreds or even thousands of years. And it’s that story – of mysterious moulds and improbable potions (some of which even worked!) – that Mike Trevethick of Thanet u3a will be sharing with us this month. It’s a tale of daring over dogma – and some lucky breaks along the way – so why not join us for this fascinating trawl through the history books.

The Welfare State: Is it Still Affordable?

In Britain today, few issues provoke more heated debate than this. On one side are those who argue, on humanitarian grounds, that the less fortunate among us deserve all the support they need in order to live with at least the most basic of human needs – shelter, food, healthcare, and the means to raise a family. Against this are an unsympathetic press-pack (pictured) who decry such people, branding them as feckless skivers, brazenly scrounging off everybody else. And in the middle – as always – are our politicians, having to make hugely difficult decisions about dividing up the national ‘pot’ in a fair and equitable manner. So, at this month’s meeting, we’ll take a look at some of the data, and consider the question of whether the welfare state is still affordable in its current form.

Minerals that glow

Speaker: Doctor Paul Beatty

Paul will be telling us all about these amazing minerals, why they glow and the many ways they’re used.

Mineral enthusiasts concentrate on displaying these minerals under UV lighting to reveal their beauty. Some minerals produce light when exposed to X-rays, electron beams (cathode rays), radioactivity, high electric fields and even mechanical energy from grinding. Others glow in response to heating, thermoluminescence, is used in archaeology, geology and environmental science to date artefacts and geological formations accurately. Other uses include TV screens based on cathode ray tubes, advertising and electronic displays, fluorescent lamps, and more recently in LED lighting using blue or UV LEDs as the means of excitation.

16 June @ 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm

This month we running another … ask the group anything.

So come along with your questions – could be related to a previous talk or really anything broadly related to computer science.

The meeting process will be :

  1. If you have a question, put it in the zoom chat window
  2. I will choose a question and raise to the group
  3. Anyone who has a response to the question can raise their hand
  4. I’ll choose who to speak as usual

Of course there is a risk that we run out of time … I will try to manage the time so we get through as many questions as possible.

Since this is a discussion rather than a presentation, we won’t record this meeting.
