What is AI?

Artificial intelligence, or AI, is technology that can do things we usually associate with human intelligence. It can spot patterns, process information and carry out tasks that seem to involve understanding and reasoning.

AI does not work in the same way as the human brain. It learns from large amounts of data and uses patterns in that data to produce an answer or carry out a task. Although seemingly having human-like intelligence, today’s AI systems are not conscious and they do not have a sense of self.

There are several different types of AI:

• Large language model (LLM) - examples include ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude. These systems are trained using very large amounts of text and other information. They learn patterns in language and use them to produce human-like answers to our questions. Some can search the internet or use other sources to provide up-to-date information.
• AI agent - we can give an AI agent a goal and allow it to take a series of steps to achieve that goal. Depending on how it has been designed, the agent may plan tasks, use computer tools, search for information and check its own progress. AI agents can be useful, but they also need careful controls. If they are badly designed or poorly supervised, they may take actions we did not intend. It is these systems that have been in the news recently - and not in a good way!
• AI systems designed for particular jobs - for example, they may create images from written descriptions, produce reports, recognise speech, analyse data or write computer programs. Some are built for one specific purpose. Others use a general AI model, such as a large language model, as their foundation.

AI and u3a

There is a great deal of interest in AI in the u3a movement. A number of local u3a’s have AI interest groups, and there are several national and online groups. The national groups include:

• AI for Everyone (National Subject Network) - this is the flagship national project team within u3a, composed of volunteer members and overseen by the National AI Subject Advisor. The network runs nationwide online learning events, curates extensive AI for Everyone Libraries filled with presentation materials, manages a monthly AI newsletter, and supports members who want to start their own local AI interest groups.
• AI for u3a AI Agitators - operating under u3a’s Interest Groups Online (IGO), this group meets over Zoom, and is specifically tailored for regular users and leaders who want to raise AI awareness, share teaching resources, and help launch classes.

How I use AI

I spend a lot of time on my computer - writing text such as this, creating designs for cards, posters, presentations etc - and I use AI to assist me with these tasks.

For example, I used AI to help write this article - generating some of the information, and checking the accuracy of the finished result. Not only does it improve what I do, it saves me a lot of time.

We’ve recently set up a new interest group at our u3a - “Science and the Natural World”. I needed a spreadsheet to keep a record of income and expenditure. I could have created this myself, but it was much quicker and easier to ask AI to do it.

I will be giving a short talk on AI at our first meeting, so I used AI to create this title slide to be shown on the screen.

AI can help create copyright-free visuals for presentations and other materials.

Is there a downside of AI?

Like all technology aids - washing machines, dishwashers, vacuum cleaners, satnavs, etc - AI improves our quality of life, but it can make us lazy. And in the case of our brains, this can be a problem.

We no longer bother to map-read as our satnavs will direct us. I didn’t bother to create the spreadsheet as AI did it for me. And this means my brain is doing less, which may result in it becoming less agile.

I asked ChatGPT if this was the case, that using AI could harm my brain. This was its response - “My honest answer is: it could, if you let me do all the thinking for you. But if you use me as a partner to challenge your thinking, improve your writing and test your ideas, I believe you can use AI without sacrificing your mental agility - and may even strengthen some of your skills.”

New Group – Songs of the 60s and 70s

In this group, each member attending the Zoom session will be invited to request a song from the 60s or 70s. We will then listen to it via the leader Diana's Spotify account. After that, we will chat about it.

At each session, the song length and chatting time are variable – sometimes the attendees will have one or two requests each; sometimes there may not be enough time for everyone to have a request.

A fun way to listen to music together.

New group - Northern Soul

Northern Soul is a music and dance movement that emerged in Northern England and the Midlands in the early 1970s. It developed from the British Mod scene, based on a particular style of Black American Soul music with a heavy beat and fast tempo. It also had its own dress style. It is still very much alive today.

If you are one of the Northern Soul Faithful or just want to hear some amazing music, then this group is for you...

Step back into the 19^th century with us from the comfort of your own home! This online group is for anyone who enjoys—or wants to discover—the rich storytelling of the Victorian era. We will meet once a month on Zoom for a series of 8 or 9 sessions to discuss classic literature in a friendly, relaxed setting. We will kick off our journey with Charles Dickens’ dramatic masterpiece, A Tale of Two Cities. Our early reading list will also include George Eliot's Middlemarch and Thomas Hardy's The Mayor of Casterbridge. Beyond these opening titles, members will help choose the rest of our reading list together. Whether you are revisiting old favourites or reading them for the very first time, all are welcome.

New group – Current affairs

We seem at present to have a public appetite for social improvement in the UK, but so often the question arises of where is the money to pay for it? There must be ways forward, but they are not simple and need a lot of thought and investigation of possibilities. There are strong disagreements in the political sphere on the best way forward for the economy. The big question is: what kind of society do we want to live in? Join in to what I hope will be an informed exploration!

We will meet once a month. We might have a monthly two-meeting cycle of outlining the problem in the first meeting, going away to investigate it, and then discussing what we have found in the second meeting. We'll decide the format as a group.

Timing to be arranged.

New group – Creative writing

Join our new monthly writing group — a friendly space for poetry, memoir, fiction and all forms of creative expression. We offer gentle prompts, quiet writing time, and supportive feedback to help you get started or keep going. Everyone has a story. Come and share yours.

There’s time to write in the session and time to share work you’ve developed at home. Beginners and experienced writers are equally welcome. Sharing is always optional, and you can write in any way that suits you.

If you’d like a welcoming community to encourage your writing life, we’d love to have you with us.

New group – Island grooves – the best of reggae

The one thing I’ve noticed about the excellent U3A Interest Groups Online is the lack of Reggae. I, for one, really enjoy listening to Reggae but sadly haven’t much intimate knowledge of the Genre. Something I would love to change and grow my knowledge and enjoyment of this fabulous music.

So, if you are interested in Reggae and would like to get involved with an IGO covering this fabulous music then please register.

Our first meeting will be on Friday 23^rd October at 10:00 am. Registered members will be sent the Zoom link closer to the time. I will also be asking for your choice of a track or two that we can listen to and enjoy.

Looking forward to seeing you at our first meeting.

New group – The inner groove: the dynamics of a song

An online interest group that brings u3a members together to listen to landmark songs, explore the DNA of iconic tracks, and share memories and musical insights in a relaxed setting with no prior musical background required. The genre and age can be very wide, but the concept is to pick important or interesting songs that innovated at the time.

The structure would be 3 songs per session analysed under the following headings:

• Why this song?
• Innovative idea(s)
• Narrative of the lyrics
• Cultural impact
• Musical Structure

We will also split the song into separate tracks (stems) to see how each track adds to the overall sound, looking at, for instance, the vocal and rhythm tracks, lead instruments and others.

Finally, we will consider the role the recording process played, such as the studio, producer and the quality of the recording.

(The term Inner Groove refers to the famous hidden audio loop at the end of The Beatles album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.)

Music has always been a big part of IGO, and with more than 30 music groups now running, it's clear that IGO has become a real home for music lovers! So we're particularly excited about u3a Rewind, a national project celebrating the music, memories and youth culture of the 1950s, 60s, 70s and 80s.

The u3a Rewind webpage features some excellent learning packs exploring the music, fashions and cultural movements of these decades, from Teddy Boys and Mods to Northern Soul, punk and New Romantics. We're especially pleased that IGO members helped to create these resources – you know who you are, and thank you! They're full of ideas for group discussions and activities, so do take a look.

But we'd also love you to get involved! Is there a song that instantly takes you back to your youth? Perhaps it reminds you of your first concert, a favourite dance hall, a summer holiday or a special person. We're inviting members to share the songs that meant something to them, along with the memories behind them. Just a few sentences can bring a moment in time back to life, and we'd love to hear your stories.

Whether you're a member of one of our many music groups or simply enjoy reminiscing about the songs of your younger days, there's something for everyone in u3a Rewind.

Explore the learning packs and share your musical memories on the u3a Rewind webpage.

Great Group Leader

I attend the psychology group led by Brenda Maciejkowicz.

I find the sessions so interesting and Brenda is very good at giving everyone a chance to express their views. She picks up on salient points raised and sends links for further study. She constantly encourages members to suggest topics of interest for future meetings, further engaging members in the group discussion.

I thoroughly enjoy these sessions – S. a group member ⭐️🌟⭐️

I would like to nominate a great group leader – Brenda Maciejkowicz, the leader of the psychology group, as being a tremendously good leader.
Very importantly, Brenda knows her subject matter very well, but on every occasion she has not been too proud to say I don’t know. But that is usually followed by BUT I will find out. And she does.
She is polite, very patient and a good communicator. I only wish some other leaders had her qualities.

u3a.org.uk/what-we-do/learning…

From afternoon teas and anniversary picnics to ceilidhs, model railways and a very special quilt, u3as across the movement have been finding all sorts of ways to mark milestone birthdays this year.

We take a look at how nine u3as have been celebrating and reflecting on the friendships, learning and shared experiences that have shaped them along the way.

20 years together

Hammersmith & Fulham u3a used its anniversary as a chance to show the breadth of what happens at their u3a. At St Mary’s Church Hall, Bridge, Scrabble and Mahjong groups demonstrated their activities, while displays showcased everything from archaeology and arts and crafts to books, writing and language learning. The Poetry Group shared readings throughout the event.

The celebration welcomed guests including the Lady Mayor of Hammersmith & Fulham, Sharon Holder, and local MP Andy Slaughter, alongside representatives from other local organisations and u3a.

25 years of learning, friendship and fun

A quarter of a century is certainly worth marking. Evesham, South Durham and Hillingdon u3as have each found their own way to make the occasion special.

Evesham u3a has come a long way since its beginnings in November 2001. Today, it has more than 1,200 members and 90 interest groups.

For its 25th anniversary, members gathered in Abbey Park for a grand picnic. A damp start soon gave way to blue skies, with Deputy Mayor Peter Scurfield joining the occasion and meeting some of Evesham u3a’s founder members.

Evesham u3a's grand picnic in Abbey Park

There was plenty of entertainment too. Sea Shanty singers performed, the Tai Chi group gave a demonstration and the Concert Band provided music. Tim Pearce from the Shakespeare group even appeared dressed as the Bard himself, mingling with the crowd while reciting sonnets and familiar Shakespeare lines.

Hillingdon u3a has embraced its silver anniversary with activities involving groups from across the u3a. There have been special rambles following the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Walkway, a sell-out dinner and dance, and a ceilidh where even hot weather didn’t stop members taking to the dance floor.

The Creative Writing group produced an anniversary anthology, while poet Brian Atkinson wrote a special piece to mark 25 years. Members have also been testing their knowledge with a 25-question anniversary quiz. And there’s been a chance to look back too. A series of ‘How We Started’ podcasts is capturing the memories of some of Hillingdon u3a’s longest-standing members and preserving the story of how it all began in 2001.

Members of South Durham u3a

South Durham u3a began its anniversary year with an afternoon tea honouring founder members, former committee members and past Chairs.

The event brought 47 guests together at The Glass House Restaurant at Darlington College. In a fitting link to u3a’s ethos of lifelong learning, hospitality and catering students prepared the menu and helped run the occasion as they embarked on their own learning journeys.

Guests were entertained by a jazz duo, while founder member Sandy Hood – now South Durham u3a’s first Honorary Member – shared some words with the gathering. More events are planned throughout the anniversary year.

30 years and plenty still to discover

Three u3as have been marking 30-year milestones this year, each in a very different way.

White Cliffs Country u3a brought more than 100 newer and long-standing members together for afternoon tea at Walmer and Kingsdown Golf Club. Guests included Admiral Sir George Zambellas, Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports and Constable of Dover Castle, and Lady Amanda Zambellas, who were presented with Honorary Memberships. Memorabilia and a timeline of the u3a’s story gave everyone a chance to look back over three decades, while the occasion also recognised the volunteers, past and present, who have helped make the u3a what it is today.

u3a Anniversary cake

At Buxton & District u3a, the Model Railway Group opened its doors to give fellow members a closer look at its intricate layout in full operation. Visitors could watch locomotives in action, explore the detailed scenery and chat to the people behind it. It was one part of a busy anniversary programme that has also included a Beetle Drive and barn dance, with a Creative Arts and Leisure Showcase still to come.

CEO Iain Cassidy, former and current u3a Chairs and Mayor of Melton Mowbray

Meanwhile, Melton Mowbray u3a brought its anniversary year to a close by putting out the bunting for 120 members and guests. Founded in 1996 with just six groups and two more in the pipeline, it now has nearly 900 members and more than 100 groups.

Its final celebration included afternoon tea, music, memories and four former Chairs joining current Chair David Ramsden. And there was one particularly local finishing touch: Third Age Trust CEO Iain Cassidy went home with his very own Melton Mowbray pork pie!

For one member, the anniversary was also a chance to reflect on what joining had meant personally: “u3a was my lifeline… I have met some wonderful people whom I am starting to call friends.”

40 years and still going strong

Sheffield and Salford u3as have both reached an impressive four decades this year.

Sheffield u3a, now with more than 3,200 members, headed to Whirlow Brook Park for a day packed with activity. Music groups kept playing even when the rain arrived, while members enjoyed walks, orienteering, art and drama sessions, a plant sale and, naturally, anniversary cake.

Cake cutting ceremony at Whirlow Brook Park

At Salford u3a, the Mayor and Mayoress joined an anniversary lunch alongside Doreen, its longest-standing member, who joined in February 1992. One of the stars of the occasion was a specially created anniversary quilt. Made by the Quilting groups, it depicts more than 50 interest groups alongside recognisable Salford scenes.

The celebrations won't end there. Groups are marking the anniversary in their own ways, with plans to bring their stories together in a ‘Salford u3a at 40’ archive for future members.

Here's to the next chapter

However they chose to mark the occasion – with a picnic, a dance, an afternoon tea, a quilt or even a pork pie – these anniversaries are about much more than the number of candles on the cake.

They are a chance to look back at the people who started each u3a, thank those who have kept them thriving and celebrate the friendships, interests and experiences members continue to share today.

Congratulations to Evesham, South Durham, Hammersmith & Fulham, Sheffield, Salford, Hillingdon, Buxton & District, Melton Mowbray and White Cliffs Country u3as! Here’s to many more years of learning, laughing and living together.

Carol, a member of Welshpool u3a who has worked with Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) since 1986, written several books on the subject and previously chaired the Association for Neuro-Linguistic Programming, shares some simple ways NLP can help us challenge negative thoughts, build confidence and embrace new experiences.

How often do you think about doing something and then decide you can’t? Sometimes we have real constraints, such as lack of time or energy, but often our minds hold us back.

If this sounds like you, then Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP for short) can help you change your beliefs about what you can do, think more positively, feel better about your capabilities and – as a result – explore, and engage in, new things with enthusiasm. NLP has been used for over 50 years in fields such as business, education, sports, health and lots more; here are some ways of using it:

Negative thoughts

If you have negative thoughts, notice if you are saying something to yourself in your head about a situation. Then, hear the same words, but in a cartoon character’s voice. You can’t take it seriously when you do that.

Learn something new

Practising in your imagination is really useful and helps develop skills. This can be applied to lots of things, such as dance steps, golf swings or starting conversations with new people.

A practical introduction to NLP techniques by Carol Harris

A beautifully illustrated children's book about friendship by Carol Harris

Confidence

Imagining people saying nice things to you, or about you, can boost how you feel. In your mind you can use all your senses to bring that imaginary scene to life with colour, movement, sound and so on. Also, changing your ‘physiology’ helps - relaxing your shoulders, breathing more deeply and smiling for example.

Communication

It’s easier to communicate with people if you’re on the same wavelength. One way of finding this out is to look for some of their personal patterns (which show up through their language and behaviour). For example, do they need lots of detail, are they very self-reliant or do they constantly want to achieve things. Each trait needs different approaches, and NLP can help you identify such patterns in yourself and other people, so you can improve your relationships.

This is only a tiny fraction of what NLP is about, and can achieve. It’s a fascinating field, can help people with all kinds of things and is well worth exploring.

New group - Custodians of Mother Earth

Philosophical discussion group

This group is for open-minded people who enjoy exploring ideas about how we live our lives and the challenges facing society today.

Over six discussion sessions, members will consider our roles and relationships as individuals, within our communities and as part of a wider world. Each session will explore a different theme:

1. Looking at ourselves – reflecting on our lives, experiences and personal growth.
2. Supporting the next generation – considering the values and guidance we pass on.
3. Learning throughout life – exploring continuous learning and self-development.
4. Rethinking the world of work – considering the purpose of work and our wider responsibilities.
5. Sharing ideas for a better future – exchanging perspectives on how we might improve our lives and those of others.
6. Living together in a changing world – discussing some of the wider challenges facing society.

The discussions will be guided by the core values of contemplation, curiosity, consciousness, compassion, collaboration, cooperation, consensus and consent. The aim is not necessarily to agree, but to listen to different perspectives and think more deeply about the way we live.

The group will meet for six sessions of 60–90 minutes at 11am on the last Wednesday of each month (except December), beginning at the end of September.

New group - The Odyssey

Odysseus, king of Ithaca, has been away from home for twenty years, ten fighting in the Trojan War, ten lost at sea. After many adventures, he returns home to deal with 108 suitors, seeking his wife, Penelope's, hand in marriage. One of two major epic poems attributed to Homer (the other is the Iliad) it is one of the oldest surviving works of literature. Over 12109 lines, originally in Homeric Greek, the poem deals with themes of wandering, return and homecoming, guest-friendship, testing and omens.

In this group, we will work our way through the poem (in English!), discussing the themes and characters.

Dates and times TBA

New group - Creating art to learn about your mind

This is a friendly, participative group where members will draw, share what they have created and talk together about their observations and experiences. No previous drawing experience or artistic ability is needed.

To get the most from the group, you will need to be able to make intentional marks on paper using a pencil, crayon, ballpoint or felt-tip pen, and to see what you are drawing. You will also need a way of showing your drawings to the group, usually by holding them up to your Zoom camera.

Members will be encouraged to join in group discussion, so you will need to be able to mute and unmute yourself on Zoom and communicate with other members.

From time to time, members may share personal thoughts or experiences as part of the discussion. Everyone is therefore asked to respect the privacy of other members and not to share personal information or experiences outside the group.

The group is intended as a creative and supportive learning activity rather than therapy or counselling. It is not designed to provide support for someone experiencing acute emotional distress.

The Old Man of Soul: a love of music

I stumbled upon u3a. Someone mentioned it on a Facebook music page I followed which piqued my interest. I then asked the question on my HiFi Dealers Facebook Forum page, of which I’m very much involved and to my surprise, several members said that they were u3a members and loved it.

This was enough for me to delve deeper. I liked what I saw. In particular, the IGO, Interest Groups Online part. I noticed that there are many varied music groups so decided to sign up and join them to see what it was all about.

My interest in music began at an early age when I heard the odd Motown track on the radio. Radio Caroline was bringing Soul and Motown to the UK, and I used to listen to it in my room. The only other comparison was my elder brother listening the Beatles. ALL. THE. TIME. Drove me nuts.

I joined the Army as a boy Soldier at 15 ½ and my first real Posting was to Berlin where my friends’ secured tickets to the best concert I have ever seen, I’ve now seen hundreds. That concert was James Brown, and he was at his peak. As a young lad from Yorkshire I’d never seen anything like it and it became engrained in my brain and cemented my love for all things Soul, Motown, R&B and of course, Funk.

Over the next decade I had a few music related weird moments. The first being in the late 70’s when after a successful tour as an instructor teaching Jungle Warfare with Training Team Brunie, I was on my way home and on a stopover in Hong Kong, visited the then famous bar/club called Ned Kellys Last Stand and heard an absolutely gorgeous song which was Native New Yorker by Odyssey. I had to have it and bought the album as soon as I got home.

The second was even more weird. In 1979 I was in Rhodesia as part of the Cease Fire Monitoring Force and stayed on after they gained independence and became Zimbabwe, Running a battle camp for the new Zimbabwe Army. One day whilst driving along I went through Fort Victoria, a one-horse town. I noticed a green fronted café and decided to stop for some fresh food and a decent brew. Wasn’t supposed to as it was still very volatile. When I got inside, I noticed they had a record player, and they started to play some fabulous music. When I enquired, it was Change and the album was The Glow of Love. I had to have it and at great expense bought the album from them. They definitely saw me coming. I then wrapped it in towels in my Bergan (Rucksack) and there it stayed for several months until I got back home to clean it and play it. Loved it ever since.

More recently, some 3-4 years prior to retirement I decided to upgrade my HiFi game and ditched the B&O stuff for serious HiFi components. By the time I retired in 2024, November, my stereo was in a fine place, and I could now play my music as often as I wanted instead of just when I had an odd day off from work.

After I found u3a and saw what other music groups were doing I noticed a lack of Soul being played so set up the Group Soul Train, which I’m not only very proud of but is going extremely well. There is a fabulous bunch of members who all very actively join in. More recently I’ve started ‘Best of the 80’s and 90’s and also asked for a ‘Potential’ group to be listed to test interest called ‘Island Vibes: The best of Reggae. Hoping that one kicks off soon as I really want to further my knowledge of Reggae. I’d like to add also that the training new group leaders receive is absolutely brilliant making the whole process very easy and pain free. Big thanks to Alison and Catherine for putting up with my constant bombardment of questions. Appreciated.

To sum up. If anyone is on the fence about joining u3a, don’t be. Sign up now. It’s certainly added some great fun and excitement to my life and of course, I’ve met some truly brilliant people as well.

Best practice for screen names when in a Zoom meeting

1. In IGO you should ensure your screen is labelled with your full name OR your first name and IGO membership number
2. If you have Zoom installed on your device - find your profile then choose Display Name to enter your name
3. An alternative to this is to change the screen name once you have joined a Zoom meeting - go to participants, find your current screen name in the list and click on it to see the option rename and then enter your full name or your first name and your IGO membership number. This will last only for the duration of the meeting.

New Group – FUSION tai qi gong beginners

FUSION Tai Qi Gong combines two ancient methods for enhancing health and wellbeing - Qi Gong and Tai Chi. Qi Gong involves calming the mind and gently working the body in harmony with the breath. Tai Chi is a moving meditation, involving a sequence of movements and postures to enhance mental and physical wellbeing. Together and practised regularly (at least once a week if possible) they are proven to maintain and enhance health.

There is an existing FUSION (Intermediate) Group which has been learning these routines for over a year, and demand means a second group is now starting for those new to these disciplines. Only a basic level of general health is needed to get started, and the weekly Zoom classes cover a short warm up, some Qi Gong Exercises, and learning the Tai Chi 10 and the Tai Chi Yang Style 24 which is the World's most popular form of Tai Chi, practised by tens of millions of people. The latter has been adapted slightly to make it easier to learn and practice over Zoom, whilst retaining all of the proven health benefits.

Thursdays at 10:00 am for an hour.

New group – Greek myths

The ancient Greek myths, as told by Hesiod and Homer amongst others, have inspired countless works of art over the span of 2,500 years or more. One of the joys of wandering an art gallery is realizing that, without looking at the information plaque, you can tell what a painting is about from your knowledge of the myths. But what is the enduring power of these tales?

This series of talks, beautifully illustrated with works of art, will explore the interwoven myths from the creation to the time of heroes. There will be eight talks in all, two each month on days to be set.

New group – Spanish fluency – intermediate plus

This is a group for those who have at least an intermediate level of Spanish (CEFR levels B1 or B2). You can test your Spanish level (free, no email required) at Lengalia.

This starts with level A1/A2 (basic), then, provided you’re at level A2, continues to B1/B2, (then C1, if you want to challenge yourself). It includes audio clips.

Each session of this conversation group will be based around a theme. The emphasis will be on improving confidence and fluency in speaking Spanish. There will be some reminders of grammatical structures and suggestions for improvement of pronunciation.

The aim is to:

• Participate in guided discussions (with prompts, as required).
• Benefit from positive correction and vocabulary expansion.
• Improve your level of Spanish (towards B2/C1) by improving fluency, accuracy, and confidence.
• Enjoy speaking and improving your Spanish.

Wednesdays at 10:00 am.

New group – The Odyssey

Odysseus, king of Ithaca, has been away from home for twenty years, ten fighting in the Trojan War, ten lost at sea. After many adventures, he returns home to deal with 108 suitors, seeking his wife Penelope's hand in marriage. One of two major epic poems attributed to Homer (the other is the Iliad), it is one of the oldest surviving works of literature. Over 12109 lines, originally in Homeric Greek, the poem deals with themes of wandering, return and homecoming, guest-friendship, testing and omens. In this group, we will work our way through the poem (in English!), discussing the themes and characters.

Read the first 75 lines of Daniel Mendelsohn's translation of The Odyssey here.

New course – English: the first 4,000 years – and perhaps a few more!

Why are Welsh and Bengali surprisingly similar? What do a newt, an adder and an orange have in common? Why did English suddenly become less like German in the 12th century – and could all our consonants eventually turn into glottal stops?

These are just some of the questions explored in English: the first 4,000 years, a popular IGO group returning for another journey through the extraordinary history of our language.

This year, there was so much interest that the journey has started a little earlier. A short pre-course, running until 28 September, takes the story even further back to explore what came before Proto-Indo-European (PIE), the reconstructed ancestor of a huge family of languages spoken today. Beginning with the Yamnaya and the peoples of the Caucasus and Lower Volga, it considers the importance of developments such as the horse and the wheel – and looks at the scientific evidence linguists use to reconstruct a language that was never written down. Perhaps English: the first 6,000 years might eventually be a more appropriate title!

The main course begins on Monday 28 September, with sessions held weekly on Mondays from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. It follows the academic year, drawing on the curriculum used by speech and language therapists, and traces the development of English from its distant origins right through to the rapidly changing language of today.

Along the way, the group will investigate how sounds and words change, how many vowel sounds English really has, and how infants acquire an instinctive understanding of language before they can even speak. At the other end of the timeline come tech acronyms, cyberpunk and the challenge faced by the Oxford English Dictionary in keeping pace with the language of programmes such as Love Island. Is our language progressing, or are we simply getting lazy? Will we ever stop swearing – and whatever happened to blasphemy?

Sessions alternate between history and linguistics. The history-themed sessions take place in weeks 1, 3, 5 and so on and are suitable for anyone interested in following the story of English. The even-numbered linguistics sessions go into greater depth and are more challenging. As the group leader puts it, if you think you could manage a good GCSE in Latin and another in German, you should cope. If not, you can simply follow the history sessions once a fortnight.

The pre-course is already under way, but members interested in joining the journey can find the full session plan here

Soul Train news

Just wanted to provide a little feedback on today's first meeting of Soul Train.

We had 9 members logged in plus myself, with 3 giving apologies before the meeting, which I thought was brilliant. Certainly the newsletter sparked big interest.

All went well, and both tunes and videos were enjoyed by all, with some very positive feedback which was great.

Have to say I couldn't have done it without your help, and it's very much appreciated. I gave you a big thumbs up for the training meeting. Very well deserved.

Overall, I've really enjoyed the whole process and feel we are already at a good level which will only grow as we move forward. Exciting times ahead - which has me thinking now of any other group that I could get going or what u3a/IGO I could get involved with.

2026 is the National Year of Reading and there are hundreds of u3a book groups across the movement where members are embracing a love of reading and discussing literature. We asked u3a book groups to share the novels that they think are perfect for reading in the summer months.

The National Year of Reading is a campaign designed to help more people of all ages discover the joy of reading. A 2025 survey by The Reading Agency found that regular readers are 86% more likely to report feeling a sense of belonging to their community and 58% feeling generally happy, compared to non-readers.

Book groups within u3a are open to lifelong literature lovers and casual readers alike. The formats of these groups vary across the movement. At some, members meet to discuss the books they're reading in their spare time while others take on a more traditional book group format, with members all reading the same book. Many groups read all types of literature while others are dedicated to specific genres. By combining novels with conversation and social interaction, joining a book group can be a compelling way to get back into reading.

If you’re looking for some inspiration, we’ve asked book groups across the movement to share recent novels that they think are perfect for the summer months.

Bakewell u3a Book Group

Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt

Light but beautifully crafted summer reading, this is a wonderfully told, gentle story, in print and audio. Although the premise sounds a bit wacky - the narrator and eponymous hero is an octopus, Marcellus, who bonds with the aquarium night cleaner and solves the mystery of her disappearing son - the book explores themes of family, love, connection and healing across generations. There’s even an excellent and very moving film starring the ever-wonderful Sally Fields. We read it as a Christmas ‘extra’ and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house.

The book cover of Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt

Shimna u3a Book Group

Seven Sisters by Lucinda Riley

“This series, based on the Seven Sisters stars consellation, tells the story of seven sisters from around the world.”

Hungerford & District u3a Book Group

The Fortnight in September by RC Sheriff

We have just finished this novel. A very gentle read, this brought lots of memories for our older readers. Coincidentally it was given a write up in Giles Coren’s ‘restaurant’ review in the Saturday Times!

The book cover of The Leopard

Hay u3a Book Group

The Leopard by Tomasi Di Lampedusa

This novel, set in 1860’s Sicily follows the toppling of the Bourbon kingdoms by the invasion of Garibaldi’s Redshirts.

The subsequent decline of the power of the aristocracy is reflected in the plot of the novel. Prince Fabrizio and his family play a chess like game, negotiating their way through the new regime. Recently included in The Guardian’s top 100 novels of the century, the prose is sublime.

Newcastle u3a Novels in Translation Group

After Midnight by Irmgard Keun

This tells the story of a naive young woman in 1930s Germany who gradually becomes aware of the horrors of that time.

u3a Office Book Group

The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón
Gothic, engrossing and faintly magical, this is a fairytale-esque story about the power of books, all set against the backdrop of post-war Barcelona.”

New Group – The soul train

Soul, Motown, R&B and Funk — if you like any of the above genres, then it will most definitely be worth checking us out.

Each month, we will share our love of all things Soul, Motown, R&B and Funk, including great music and good conversation. We will start by selecting an album to listen to and discuss, then as the months tick by, we will open it up to members' choices, which will really be fun to hear all your favourites and for the whole group to enjoy.

The first few months will get us going as follows. We will start with the gorgeous album from Toni Braxton, Secrets. This album was 30 years old on the 18th of June just gone, and it’s the one which really sealed Toni’s place in R&B history. Well worth a visit.

Month Two will be a look at the albums of Sade, 6 in total, so far. So far, being the appropriate name of her full 6 album record collection box set. It really is a work of Art and with ongoing talk of her returning and releasing more. This really could be a winner.

In Month 3, we will look at the series Motown Chartbusters, released in the 70’s. It was Volume 3, which sealed the deal for me with Motown and is a great album featuring the Temptations. Marvin Gaye. Stevie Wonder, Marther Reeves and the Supremes, to name just a few.

We will meet on the 4th Wednesday of each month at 10:00 am until 11:30. 1 ½ hours of first-class music.

As James Brown once said, “We're gonna have a funky good time”.

Maupassant étant un maître reconnu internationalement dans ce domaine, nous utiliserons le recueil suivant : « Tous les Contes et Nouvelles de Maupassant » (disponible en téléchargement à un prix modique) sur Amazon Kindle.

Karen Sawyer is Chair of the Festival Working Team while Margaret Fiddes is the Festival Programme Coordinator and along with Special Events Officer Julie Travers, they have led the Festival Working Team. They have tirelessly worked to create an engaging programme that puts the members at the heart of the event.

Across the three days, over 120 activities are taking place with activities covering sport, music, art, history, and learning. There is a range of talks as well as interactive workshops, providing members with a variety of different ways to learn. Some of the more unusual activities members can sample include laughter yoga, a walking cricket tournament, and shinrin-yoku, more commonly known as forest bathing.

New Group – Mindfulness now

This 8-week rolling mindfulness course offers an opportunity to explore the origins of mindfulness, understand the theory behind its many benefits, and develop a personal mindfulness practice in a supportive and relaxed environment. Each session includes guided practices and practical techniques that participants can continue to build on at home, helping to bring greater awareness and balance into everyday life.

Mindfulness has been shown to support wellbeing in many ways, including helping to reduce stress, improve focus, encourage relaxation, and promote a greater sense of calm and resilience. Whether you are completely new to mindfulness or looking to deepen an existing practice, this course provides gentle guidance and encouragement to help you move forward at your own pace.

Great group leaders

I would like to nominate Brenda as a great psychology group leader and say a huge thank you to her.

Brenda is a brilliant presenter — knowledgeable, organised, approachable, and genuinely inspiring. Every session feels like an adventure into the incredible and diverse world of psychology, and I always come away having learnt something new.

What makes the group especially enjoyable is Brenda’s ability to bring out the best in everyone. She creates such a welcoming and engaging atmosphere that encourages discussion, reflection, and curiosity. It is a privilege to be part of such a fantastic group led by our exceptional leader Brenda

Mary Ann, group member ⭐️🌟⭐️

I'd like to nominate Roger who leads the Canva courses.

All the time and effort he has put in to make Canva accessible and understandable to the groups is truly commendable, as is his patience in answering all our questions. We are shown examples of all the ways we can use Canva, and also exercises to practise in our own time. It's like having a book, a YouTube video and a personal tutor all in one!

Regards - Val - group member ⭐️🌟⭐️

I am pleased to comment on Gordon, who runs TWO IGO groups that I subscribe to.

The first is Fusion Tai Qi Gong on Wednesdays at 10.30.

Gordon has been an amazing tutor, and the support he has also provided via Padlets and online articles is just immense. His teaching is awesome and the empathy he extends to every member is a joy. I cannot thank him and u3a enough.

Secondly, he then follows that fortnightly with Apple Devices IGO which is proving to be a learning curve for us all. Even when he is confronted by some highly talkative members, his diplomatic skills and calm reaction are also great. Again, his humility and willingness to share is awesome. u3a IGO Members are so privileged to have access to such a professional, kind and considerate person. Thank you, Gordon.

David - group member ⭐️🌟⭐️

Latin tutor Robert, is great. He is very patient but also very knowledgeable and interesting. I would recommend his classes to everyone.

Existing group - Neville Shute books

After having a mad moment I volunteered to set up and run the Nevil Shute Books group. At the moment we are quite a small group with only 12 members and we read at least one book each month.

For the first meeting we looked at the first book Nevil Shute published in 1926 - Marazan. We thought the book was of its time and there were some terms and terminology within the book that came across as quite dated - his conversations about women for example and the idea that if he wanted to fly anywhere he would just get in a plane and go - we didn't think it was as easy at that today! Several of us thought it was a bit "boys own" style but after discussion agreed that may just reflect a style of writing that was quite popular at the time - there was a conversation around the similarity in style to 39 steps and other John Buchan books. We are interested in exploring how his writing develops in later books and how the events of the 20th Century affected and influenced his writing and characters.

If you are interested in Nevil Shute books - or just interested in investigating an author you may not know much about then please join our friendly group. We meet on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 2pmand for the next meeting we will be looking at So Disdained which is the second book that was published. If we have time and enough people have been able to read them we will also look at Stephen Morris and Pilotage which are actually the first books he wrote but weren't published until after his death.

Existing group - English: the first 4000 years

Our group "English: the first 4,000 years" studied how three keywords from three Semitic languages have entered English. Loanwords are nearly always transliterated rather than translated, so that the meaning is lost.

An important example is "shahid", which meant "witness" to the original Aramaic-speaking Christians, either "saw a crime" or as "declared their faith". This was translated into Greek as "martyros", but some Christians became Arabic-speaking Muslims after 632 CE. The Greek was then transliterated into Welsh as "merthyr" ( e.g. Tydfil) and English as "martyr".

We complied a glossary, "from Adam to Armageddon", which allows a single narrative to be written about the three religions. Do IGO members think that dialogue between the three Semitic-speaking languages would reduce conflict?

New group - Patriarchy, power and society

Around 12,000 years ago agriculture changed human history forever and ushered in the social institutions of patriarchy, domination culture and private property. This new discussion group will explore how our modern world has been shaped by the development and impact of patriarchy:

• Power and conflict: has patriarchy been a cause of war, crime, and social inequality?

• Religion: has patriarchy been a cause of organised religion?

* Class politics: has patriarchy been a cause and effect of slavery, feudalism, capitalism and socialism?

• Identity politics: has patriarchy been challenged by social movements for civil rights, gay rights and women’ s bbrights?

• The future: patriarchy and gender ideology, transhumanism, artificial intelligence and space travel

• Our environment: is patriarchy bound up with human supremacism, domination and dominion over our environment and non-human creatures, as opposed to stewardship of or cohabitation with our environment and non-human creatures?

Meetings will be a mix of pre-planned topics and discussions based on history and on current news. This is a collaborative discussion group that welcomes all points of view.

Great Group Leader

I would like to nominate Stephen Balmer as a great group leader. He has just stood down from leading our French Intermediate Group, so this is really a thank you to him. He organised and led our weekly meetings for about 18 months, from which good friendships have grown and our French speaking has improved. Stephen inspired me with his grasp of French over a fairly short period of time, and membership of this group has increased my confidence. Stephen is a good facilitator, welcoming, and encouraging – thank you Stephen.

Swallows and Amazons - IGO intermediate recorders

Occasionally, the music for the recorder group follows a theme. Recently, at least one piece each session has been following Arthur Ransome’s description in “Swallows and Amazons” of the party on Captain Flint’s Houseboat. Ransome gives clues to the music, such as “Spanish Ladies”, “The Whale”, “Amsterdam”, “Blow the Man Down” and “Away to Rio”. We would claim that we’ve played what he might have meant, even if it wasn’t exactly what he did mean. Captain Flint played a sailor’s hornpipe and that gave an excuse to play three hornpipes. One was by Purcell, one by Handel, and one you might recognise from “The Last Night of the Proms”.

We’re also working our way through a Bach Orchestral Suite, and we’ve marked Good Friday by playing music by Pergolesi and the Spring Equinox with music by, of course, Vivaldi.

All in all, a key factor in choice of our music is variety.

Peter - Intermediate Recorders Group Leader

Whether you've recently picked up a paintbrush for the first time or you've been knitting for years, creative hobbies can make life richer, healthier, and more connected.

Here's why making time for creativity is one of the best things you can do for your wellbeing.

Creativity keeps your mind sharp

When you learn a new skill or work through a creative challenge, your brain forms new connections. Research consistently shows that engaging in creative activities helps maintain cognitive function, improve memory, and support mental agility.

It's not about being "good" at something. It's about the process of doing. The concentration required to learn a new stitch or mix the right colour on a palette is a genuine workout for your brain.

Carole hard at work

“Sometimes you might sit next to someone who’s doing something, and you go. ‘what is that?’ And it might be a technique you haven’t tried, or something they’ve worked out themselves. It’s great to keep learning more about woodcarving through others. That’s what u3a is all about.”

- Carole, member of High Wycombe u3a's woodcarving group

Gives you a sense of purpose

Having a project to work on, with something to look forward to, to finish, to be proud of, is deeply motivating. Creative hobbies give you goals that are entirely your own. There are no deadlines, no performance reviews, and no wrong answers.

“There’s just something about a piece of wood and working with chisels and gauges and using them to create something. It’s a slow process, it’s not something you do in one session - it might take months which is part of the pleasure of creating." says Carol.

It boosts your mood

Creative activity triggers the release of dopamine, the feel-good chemical associated with reward and motivation. Many people describe a creative flow state as deeply calming, almost meditative. Whether it's writing, drawing, playing music, or crafting, getting absorbed in something you love is a proven way to reduce stress and anxiety.

“I really took to patchwork. I’m completely hooked! The group is so friendly, so nurturing. If you make mistakes, there are people there to help. It’s just a very warm and nurturing group and I absolutely love it.”

- Wendy, member of Melton Mowbray u3a's Patchwork group

Wendy with her sewing machine

Build genuine connections

One of the most underrated benefits of creative hobbies is the community they create. There’s something about making something together, or sharing your work with others, that builds trust and friendship quickly.

"As well as learning skills you come together, you socialise, you make friends. For me, I was lucky enough to be able to retire at 60 and, apart from travel which I’m very keen on, forming friendships in a completely different setting like u3a was really important to me." says Wendy.

It's never too late to start something new

One of the most inspiring things about u3a is how many members try something completely new and absolutely love it. Curiosity doesn't have an age limit, and neither does creative potential.

Art works created by members of Monmouth u3a art group

“I never went to art school. But art has always been within me, and I have so many ideas just using materials to generate art, so the u3a committee suggested that I should start an art group. I believe that anyone can be creative!”

- Heather, who leads Monmouth u3a's art group

Missing Pieces encourages members to uncover the real life stories behind local listed buildings.

Inspired by Historic England's project of the same name, u3a's new learning activity encourages members to contribute to the archive around listed buildings in their area.

u3a's project is UK wide, enabling members to take part in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland - although the way that members can participate varies dependent on the region the listed building is in. As part of the project, u3a has reached out to heritage charities across the UK - including Historic England, Save Britain's Heritage, People's Collection Wales and Historic Environment Scotland.

The activity is supported by u3a Subject Adviser Sandra Whitnell. Speaking about the importance of the project and it's relevance to u3a members, she said, "History’s not just about places but about people and stories. These stories should be inclusive and accessible. There are over 600 local history groups within the u3a and many more are involved and curious about their local history.’

Members can contribute individually or collaborate on submissions within their interest groups. These submissions can be memories, research or, in some nations, photography, artwork and creative writing. This means the project is ripe for interpretation by a broad range of u3a interest groups.

By contributing to the projects, members add to the historic record, bringing these important buildings to life by sharing the stories of the people who lived in them. It's also a way for members to learn more about the places they live.

The project was launched at the first in a series of online u3a events exploring historic buildings in the UK. At this opening event, Gareth Powell from Historic England spoke about the project and shared his enthusiasm for u3a’s involvement. He said, "I really believe the built environment and telling of local stories are for everyone. They’re not defined by your academic background or interests."

For the first time ever, two runners have taken on and completed the incredible challenge of the London Marathon in support of u3a.

A huge congratulations to Sheryl, whose mother is a member of West Bridgford u3a, and Clive, a member of Charnwood u3a, for completing the TCS London Marathon to raise money for the Third Age Trust.

Sheryl's connection to u3a

This was Sheryl's third marathon and she chose to run it in support of the Third Age Trust, due to the difference it has made to her mum's life, after the bereavement of Sheryl's dad.

Talking about what this run means to her she said, "u3a has provided an important source of connection for my mum, during times that could've been very lonely and isolating, providing learning opportunities and experiences like Tai Chi, which has become a great way of meeting new people in a really difficult time for her. My mum is an amazing supportive individual, and therefore anything that helps my mum live a happier life since my dad has gone holds a very dear place in my heart."

Sheryl, on one of her runs prepping for the marathon

Clive, after completing the London Marathon

A new chapter for Clive

Clive is a u3a member himself, having joined after his retirement last year. He takes part in the badminton and pickleball groups and attends the monthly meetings. For him, u3a represents a new chapter.

He said, "I was a bit anxious at joining the organisation as I was unsure what they could offer me. I have been bowled over by the warm welcome I have had from members welcoming me to various groups and events."

Supporting u3a for years to come

The money raised by Sheryl and Clive will go towards enriching the lives of our members, expanding our offering of online learning opportunities and extending our reach. Our hope is a future where no one in later life needs to be lonely, as everyone can benefit from the u3a community.

Support for group leaders on IGO.

We are endlessly impressed with the talents of those who offer their time to run groups. However, we all need a bit of support from time to time, a chance to share ideas or share experiences of being in that leadership role.

There is a group on IGO called Group Leader Informal Meeting, which is run by two of the group leaders, and is a chance for peer-to-peer support. If you raise anything that needs attention, we can pass it on, and everyone can offer their experience.

The next meeting is on Monday 27th April at 4pm, and will last no more than one hour.

If you would like to be notified of the meetings, please join the group on Beacon.

Last chance to renew your IGO membership

If you intend to stay with IGO over the next year, make sure you renew your embership by the end of April. Non-renewals will be removed from groups at the end of the month.

If you receive a renewal reminder email on 23 April, this means that you have not yet renewed.

Inspired by Historic England’s national Missing Pieces project, this activity invites members to look beyond official records and explore the lived experiences, memories, and personal connections that bring listed buildings to life. Whether it’s a place you’ve passed every day, a building with a family connection, or one that’s quietly overlooked, your contribution can help build a richer, more human picture of our shared heritage.

• 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice
• 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
• 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
• ½ teaspoon sea salt
• Freshly cracked black pepper to taste
• 4 tablespoons creamy peanut butter
• 1 tablespoon maple syrup
• 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juice
• 2 teaspoons soy sauce (use tamari for gluten-free)
• 1 to 2 teaspoons toasted sesame oil
• 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
• 2 to 3 tablespoons water more as needed

Method

Pat dry the excess water from the block of tofu. Slice the tofu widthwise into ⅓ to ½-inch thick slices (about 10 slabs on a 14-ounce block). Dab with paper towels to get rid of some excess water.

Heat the 2 tablespoons of oil in a large nonstick frying pan over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, add the tofu slices. Cook for 6 to 8 minutes, gently moving them around the pan as needed to coat evenly in the oil, or until the bottom is golden browned. Stand back to avoid oil sputter. Using a spatula, flip the tofu and cook for 4 to 6 minutes on the other side.

Note: I find it helpful to use a large spatula and a smaller offset spatula or butter knife to flip the tofu.

Meanwhile, make the slaw. Shred the cabbage and carrots (using a mandoline, box grater, or food processor shredding disc). Transfer the cabbage and carrots to a large bowl, and add the cilantro. In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, sesame oil, lime juice, ½ teaspoon sea salt, and black pepper to taste. Pour the vinaigrette on top of the slaw and toss well to coat. Add a final squeeze of lime juice or a sprinkle of salt and pepper, if needed.

Liz Ervine, u3a Council Representative for Scotland, shares an account of the recent u3a trip to the House of Lords.

The u3a movement took a step in raising its profile in Westminster last week, as u3a members from across the UK attended a special invitation visit to the House of Lords. The event formed part of the Third Age Trust's ongoing work to ensure that u3a expertise, particularly around positive ageing, is heard by policymakers in both Houses.

Each region and nation of the UK was allocated two places for the visit, so that a wide spread of the movement was represented.

We began the day with a guided tour of the Palace of Westminster, a truly magnificent part of our architectural heritage that represents the four nations of the UK.

After the tour, we gathered in the Attlee Room for a Q&A session with four members of the House of Lords. Representing a mix of political parties, the members all had an interest in lifelong learning, education and housing.

One continues to work part-time in a London state school. They wanted everyone to be encouraged to develop their full potential no matter their age.

u3a members listening to members of the House of Lords

During this session, we gained a deeper understanding of the role of the House of Lords and its 800 members. We learnt that the second chamber is needed to give proposed parliamentary bills proper scrutiny. Many peers play substantial roles on committees and support research teams. It was really interesting to hear how political change comes about through individuals coming together to act.

u3a Chair, Allan Walmsley, speaking at the u3a and House of Lords panel event

Over a sandwich lunch, we had more opportunities to talk to Lords, Baronesses, and the HoL Comms Team. Peers showed strong awareness of lifelong learning and enthusiasm for the work of u3a.

We then watched members of the House of Lords ask questions to the Government. It was a very civilised affair covering a range of interesting topics.

Next steps

During the day, a number of next steps were discussed. One proposal was the possibility of a House member becoming an ambassador for u3a in Westminster. This would enable u3a to contribute expertise in a range of ways on topics relating to positive ageing, nonformal learning, social isolation and other relevant policy areas.

It was a very positive, productive day, but shouldn't be seen as a standalone event. Instead, it's the beginning of a deeper relationship between u3a and Parliament. Strengthening this connection could help ensure the voices and experiences of older adults are better represented in national policy discussions.

The event certainly raised the profile of the u3a. Thanks to Harriet Radermacher and the u3a Policy Team for their work in supporting the event, and to the HoL Comms Team for their welcome and organisation.

For all of us who attended, the day was a classic example of learning and living and well worth the early start!

For me, it was a great privilege to share with others what the u3a movement is about and what it means to me and to others.

At Barnet u3a, members meet together to learn the skills of origami and book binding. It's all guided by group leader Sam, who explains where the interest comes from and why it's so special to share it with others in a u3a group.

With the rustle and fold of the paper, the fabric and colourful designs, bookbinding and origami are excellent practices as we enter the third stage of our lives.

My own practice in these areas is not as a professional, but as someone who has been drawn to both from a young age. Transfixed by Robert Harbin’s TV show in the 1970’s, our home was full of children folding paper. As a young teacher in the late 80’s. I was taught to do simple bindings from a fellow teacher which I shared with the children I taught. In latter years, I have taken to more bookbinding as a way to re-connect with my body and enjoy the slowness of crafting. And since October, my home has been filled with u3a members taking steps along this path.

There are three distinct aims for the group:

• To introduce them to the art of bookbinding
• To connect with our body via our hands
• To spark creative endeavour that may have been lost or forgotten with the challenges of work and life

The principles of Wabi-Sabi

Our group is guided by Wabi-Sabi, a Japanese aesthetic and philosophical worldview. We follow the principles of:

• Imperfection: Accepting the flaws, these contribute to the beauty.
• Impermanence: We are working with paper and card, all subject to decay over time.
• Incompletion: We embrace the idea that nothing is ever truly finished.

Boxes created by the group

All about skill sharing

In line with the core values of u3a, each member brings their own experience into the group sessions. Whether that be their careers in planning, design or business, or their own creative endeavours such as printing, painting, or sewing.

u3a members holding their homemade notebooks

The results have been wonderful to witness: growing friendship and camaraderie in very mixed groups, members going off and pursuing longer courses in bookbinding, members sharing their own knowledge and taking the lead in newer projects. There are members who enjoy the community aspect of bookbinding and have researched places to visit in London. We have had two group visits to a central London stationers shop to find bookcloth and stunning chiyogami papers to decorate our books. I honestly could not have asked for a better group of people to connect with.

What the members say:

At the end of the first project I asked the group to give me feedback on what they enjoyed most. Here are a few comments:

"Our first session included some origami, and we then went on to produce our first notebook, replete with hard cover, spine, ribbon etc. What I can't get over is creating something which looks SO professional - I never thought I would have been able to produce something like this. Sam also organised a fascinating visit to a leading bookbinding shop in central London, and we spent hours looking at all the beautiful and varied paper they sold, plus all the equipment required for this craft. This newly created group is an excellent example of how effective and beneficial u3a is, and I have been delighted to be part of it." - Marie-Louise

"I had developed some bookbinding skills five years ago and had booked an intensive journal making course when COVID struck. I can no longer cope with intensive courses, I had given up hope of progressing. This group is small-scale, friendly and very supportive, generously and skilfully led by Sam in her own home, and enables everyone to succeed." - Carol

img src="https://www.u3a.org.uk/imges/news/2026/Blog/Barnet_u3a_members_with_their_selfbinded_books.png" alt="
u3a members holding their homemade notebooks
">

u3a members holding their homemade notebooks

"I joined the u3a bookbinding group to learn how to make a book. Under Sam’s patient guidance and within our group’s collaborative camaraderie, I experienced calming rituals of folding, cutting, sewing and glueing that developed into joy and pride as my book began to take shape. I have learned that the technique, the time and focus are just one part of the whole. As I look at my finished book, even before a word is entered on its blank pages, I seeI see it has a soul - a book remembers the hands that made it." - Jacek

It's great to teach our hands in our third age to bring beauty into the world. Beauty that we can then use to share our wisdom with others through writing, drawing or painting.

Rhys, from Witney u3a's Welsh group, busts common myths about the Welsh language and shares the joys of learning Welsh in England.

How much do you know about Welsh? Let me guess:

• There's a severe shortage of vowels
• Welsh place names are unpronounceable
• Wales has the UK's longest place name
• It sounds 'gutteral' - like someone clearing their throat
• Most words in modern Welsh are borrowed from English, and Welsh is a dialect of English.

These are common beliefs, but only one of them is right!

Myth 1: Lack of vowels

Welsh actually has more vowels than English, because 'w' and 'y' are also vowels. So it has five vowels overall.

Myth 2: Hard to pronounce

Welsh is a phonetic language. Once you learn the rules, place names are easy, and spoken exactly how they're written - no exceptions. Unlike places like Gloucester, Leicester, Derby and Bicester...

Myth 3: Gutteral sounding

The beauty of language is a matter of taste. But few are more beautiful, in my view, than the one your mother spoke when she first talked to you.

Myth 4: Borrowed English words

Some words in Welsh are borrowed from English, but borrowing from a dominant language is a characteristic of minority languages the world over.

Welsh is certainly not a dialect of English. It's one of the family of Celtic languages which includes Scots Gallic, Irish (also known as Gaelic), Manx, Cornish and Breton. All of these languages are much older than English.

Tiles from a Welsh Scrabble set are ideal for learning vocabulary!

Myth 5: Longest place name in the UK

This one is actually true! The longest place name in the UK is Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. If you disentangle it, it all has meaning. But let's not forget that it was manufactured by the locals to attract Victorian tourists keen on photography and rail travel!

Members of Witney u3a's Welsh Group

Learning Welsh in England

Witney u3a has Welsh Group which is thriving. The members either want to experience Welsh having never spoken it before, or re-learn it having spent part of their childhood in Wales.

There are also some fluent speakers who want to keep their language alive and share its beauty with others.

Let these people speak for themselves:

First, from enthusiastic learners: "We’ve all had experience either of Wales, Cornwall or languages not encountered every day (such as Estonian). Hitherto, however, Welsh has been a bit of a closed book! This u3a Group, which covers both Welsh language and culture allows us to explore what Welshness means and learn this new language pretty much from scratch."

Next, from re-learners: “As I've grown older, my Welsh roots have started to tug, and I was delighted when the opportunity arose to revisit the language I've always regarded as my native tongue.”

And, finally, from our fluent speakers: “Need we say more than quote the last line of our national anthem: ‘O bydded i’r hen iaith barhau.’ (Google Translate is pretty good!)

Are there any u3a groups out there, I wonder, learning Gallic, Irish, Manx, Cornish or Breton?

Lancaster & Morecambe u3a member Pauline leads a 'MOTO' group which connects together members on their own for weekly socials, and to do one-off activities with others. She talks about how the group works and how it enables members to make new friendships.

How a MOTO group works

MOTO (Members On Their Own) started in late February 2022, and has steadily grown since then. The membership of the group hovers around 100.

We are a relaxed, member-driven group of individuals on their own - some are bereaved, some divorced, some are single by choice, and some have partners who cannot or do not want to socialise. All are people who want company occasionally. Some folk are regulars, and form a solid friendship group, with some meeting up independently. Others only come occasionally, and others tell me they can’t come but want to get my weekly emails as it keeps them informed, and they know if they need a lifeline we are there. This group provides a way of finding a new community for those on their own.

Sunday socialising

Most Sunday afternoons we have a ‘drop-in’, [attendance not compulsory!], alternately in Lancaster and Morecambe areas, sometimes in a nearby village. Sunday afternoons can be challenging for folk on their own - everyone else seems to be with friends or family. MOTO provides an easy casual way of getting company, a chat, a reason for some to get dressed.

Facilitating friendships

We have other ‘happenings’ and gatherings as members suggest, and sometimes organise, ways in which they would like to meet and enjoy company. So far members have linked up for cinema, theatre and concert visits, dog walking, a garden party and several lunches! We welcome all suggestions - if a member wants to arrange something we will circulate the information for them.

For those with Smartphones we have a WhatsApp group that enables members to contact each other spontaneously without waiting for our facilitators to pass on messages.

It is all very relaxed and friendly, and our facilitators, Pauline, Sue and Ruth, strive to enable members to enjoy meeting new friends. There is no longer a need to do everything on your own – other members might like to join you. No-one is a stranger – just friends you haven’t met yet.

New group – carbon footprint personal matters

The group will help us avoid the frustrations we can have when we try to reduce the carbon emissions that we are personally responsible for. This includes evaluating the options, managing the required changes and adjusting to the new technology that we may have adopted.

Examples are a home insulation project, a heatpump installation, solar panels, a battery electric vehicle, a home energy storage, etc.

As our government embarks on a very fast process of decarbonisation, much information is being made available, as well as significant support including financial.

So this group would need core members that have taken some steps and could share their journey to help others.

It could be a series of sessions that others that have personal examples that they would like to share could present on. The idea would be to learn how individuals were able to take charge and change something significant, while avoiding drastic or painful lifestyle changes.

And potentially the sessions could allow some time for a surgery style q&a.

u3a.org.uk/what-we-do/learning…

At u3a, we know that it’s never too late to learn something new. But if you’ve never picked up an instrument before, it could seem daunting.

u3a member and Recorder Subject Adviser Val, gives her top tips for picking up a new instrument in later life and how to have fun and enjoy the process.

Why should you learn an instrument?

Other than being fun, there are so many benefits to playing an instrument for our health and wellbeing, particularly in later life.

• Brain health: music stimulates every part of your brain and playing an instrument is linked to better brain function and memory
• Feel good: playing releases endorphins and reduces stress
• Physical wellbeing: woodwind instruments can help your lung capacity while instruments like piano and ukulele can help with your physical dexterity
• Make friends: my friendship pool has trebled since I’ve been playing and I often see my recorder friends for meals out, not just playing music
• Sense of achievement: getting better at an instrument and making music is so rewarding!

Here is the advice I always suggest to beginners that will make learning a new instrument as simple and fun as possible.

1. Learn the basics

Many people feel put off learning an instrument if they can’t read music. But there are so many great online resources available to help you – just 10 minutes a day of practice is enough to get you learning and identifying notes in no time.

Some great places to start:

• Musictheory.net - a free website to get you started with the basics
• First Steps in Music Theory – a small, cheap guide to starting from ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music)

2. Don't spend lots of money

You don’t need to go out and buy the most expensive instrument in the shop. Most instruments have affordable versions that are great for beginners while you’re getting used to it.

With recorders, plastic ones are much easier to clean than more expensive wooden ones that have to be sent off to be serviced. If you’ve joined a music group, see what other members use to help you choose what to buy.

3. Take advantage of free online music

You don’t need to buy lots of beginners’ books of sheet music – there’s a wealth of free music online.

Find YouTube videos and play along at home to practice rhythm and timing – don’t worry too much about finding the right notes at first!

There are even free metronome apps you can download on your phone or tablet to help keep you in time.

4. Make mistakes

Even the best professional musicians in the world still make mistakes. You will make mistakes so you don’t need to apologise for them or feel embarrassed. It’s all part of the learning process, and everyone who plays an instrument has been where you are now.

5. Relax and enjoy it!

With the recorder, you won’t be able to play properly if your hands and body are tight.

Learning an instrument takes time and you won’t become proficient immediately, so laugh through your mistakes and enjoy the process. Music is meant to be fun!

6. Join a group

Playing together is a great way to learn a new instrument as you’ll be supported by a group of people who have all been in your position. It’s also a great way to find camaraderie and friendship!

If your local u3a doesn't offer the instrument you're interested in, get involved online with a music group at Interest Groups Online. Or set up your own group - music Subject Advisers can help with this.

Take the next step

If you're interested in trying out the recorder, but don't know where to start, I offer five free online lessons for u3a members. Contact me to set this up.

Lunar New Year is one of the most vibrant celebrations in the world. This year, as we move into the Year of the Horse, u3a members mark the occasion in their own ways.

Evesham and District u3a China group meet to discuss China, its culture and influence. They share information and research findings about the country and discuss the impact of China’s rise on the rest of the world.

David, group leader, shares some fun facts about Lunar New Year, and specifically how it is celebrated in China:

Lunar New Year marks the start of a new year based off the lunar calendar. It is celebrated across many Asian cultures, most notably the Chinese New Year. This year it is celebrated between 17 February and 3 March as we move into the Year of the Horse.

Celebrations last up to 15 days ending with the Lantern Festival. It is all about family, fresh starts, good fortunes and food.

Common traditions

• Red decorations - red symbolises luck and good fortune.

• Red envelopes containing money are given to the children for good luck.

• Deep cleaning before the New Year to sweep out bad luck before the new year begins.

• Family feasts are enjoyed, with traditional foods like dumplings, spring rolls, fish, and rice cakes.

Fun facts about Lunar New Year

• The Dragon is the only mythical animal in the zodiac and most popular.

• Oranges and tangerines are gifted because their names in Chinese sound like “luck” and “wealth”.

• Cutting your hair on New Year is bad luck, symbolises the cutting off of good fortune.

• Naps are discouraged on New Year. Sleeping means laziness all year.

• Fish is served BUT not fully eaten to symbolise surplus for the year ahead.

And what better way to honour the tradition of feasting on delicious food than by sitting down together over a meal?

Over at Tonbridge u3a, the Discovering the Far East group meet to satisfy curiosity about a region which is growing so rapidly, both economically and politically.

Having recently explored topics ranging from Chinese espionage to Cambodian temples, the group marked Lunar New Year in the most fitting way - with a traditional meal at a local Chinese restaurant.

IGO Chess club

The IGO Chess Club meets 10:00 2nd and 4th Fridays during the winter months (October-March), excepting December when there is no meeting. In summer (April-September) meetings may be 2nd or 4th Fridays only, or there may be a summer holiday, depending on member demand.

In addition to playing friendly chess games, we also examine interesting puzzles, grandmaster games and instructive videos. The group is not intended for beginners. A typical member has played little chess since school days but is interested in taking up the game on retirement. New members are always welcome.

Great group leaders

I’m in Sandra W’s Group Writing Compelling (Non) Fiction. She has great ideas for our ‘homework’ pieces, and she offers valuable and constructive observations on our scribbles. I really enjoy our monthly two-hour sessions.

I d like to say a huge thank you to Gordon R, who does a marvellous job for us in both the Fusion Tai Chi Qong and Apple device classes.

Always well prepared with great back up and study material, it has been hugely helpful for me.

Thank you, David C, a group member

Me – lead a u3a group? But I'm only a beginner myself!

I have been a u3a member of the Beginners Family History group for just under a year. The leader, Dawn, was amazing. She had both extensive knowledge and experience. However, as we all know, life sometimes throws us curve balls. Dawn had to resign as both leader and member of the group. She left such enormous shoes to fill.

So what happens now? I volunteered to facilitate the next meeting just to find out if between us we could keep the group going. Was there anyone who felt they could take on the leadership?

As you maybe able to surmise from the title of the article we all felt we couldn’t do it. After all we were ALL beginners.

But, after a very interactive meeting, we came to the conclusion that we all had much to learn but we also all had much to offer. We came up with a list of topics we would be interested in and agreed to “give it a go”. So I agreed to take it on with the understanding that being a fulltime carer for my 94 year old Mum I too may have my challenges some months.

Dawn passed my name on to the u3a group co-ordinator who set me up on the Beacon site as an administrator for the group. Once logged on I was amazed at just how much instant support was available on the site.

I managed to email all the group members through Beacon to adhere to data protection regulations as I wanted to find out if people wanted to stay or if life had changed for them too. If they no longer wanted their place it would free up space for some from the wait list to join us. I also attached the schedule for the next six months and managed to update the members Beacon site too.

I had some people who wanted to leave as life had changed for them and others who had not attended for a while to come back and join us.

So the answer is yes. I can be a beginner in the subject and be a leader of the group too. It won’t be the same but our plan is now to put into practice what Dawn taught us, share that knowledge with “Newbies” and learn from each other. Which is what u3a is all about.

A royal achievement: IGO research to be published

We are delighted to share some wonderful news from one of our IGO groups.

The session, “Which King’s English?” by IGO group English: the first 4000 years, has led to the forthcoming publication of their research in Studies in English Language Teaching (ISSN 2329-311X, Online), Vol. 14, No. 1, March 2026.

The article, “Lawman’s Brut – Old English Reconstructed,” by Ed Conduit, Sally Dickinson, Patricia Warren and the Class of 25/26, is the result of real dedication, lively discussion, and impressive collaborative scholarship.

The study explores Brut, a medieval account of King Arthur and a long line of English kings. It looks at the kind of English the author was aiming to write, the challenges he faced, and how his work influenced later historical writing in England. The research also places the text in its historical moment, helping us better understand why it mattered at the time — and why it still matters today for students of English language history.

This publication is a fantastic achievement and a testament to the hard work, insight, and teamwork of everyone involved.

Congratulations to Ed, Sally, Patricia, and the brilliant Class of 25/26 on this well-deserved success!

Opening our doors: IGO fair attracts 1,056 attendances across 10 inspiring sessions

The IGO Fair (11–13 February) was a fantastic success, designed to open our doors and welcome new people into the IGO community. Across 10 lively and engaging sessions, we recorded an impressive 1,056 attendances — a strong sign of interest from those keen to discover what IGO has to offer.

The fair created a wonderful opportunity for visitors to experience the range, energy, and expertise within our groups, and to see first-hand how they could get involved.

A huge and heartfelt thank you goes to our incredible group leaders who so generously gave their time, skills, and enthusiasm to bring each session to life. Your commitment and passion were key to making the IGO Fair such a success and to inspiring others to become part of our community.

Please could we also say a special welcome to new members who have joined us as a result of the fair!

Moules marinieres

Ingredients

• 1.75kg/4lb mussels
• 1 garlic clove, finely chopped
• 2 shallots, finely chopped
• 15g/½oz butter
• a bouquet garni of parsley, thyme and bay leaves
• 100ml/3½fl oz dry white wine or cider
• 120ml/4fl oz double cream
• handful of parsley leaves, roughly chopped

1. Wash the mussels under plenty of cold, running water. Discard any open ones that won't close when lightly squeezed.
2. Pull out any tough, fibrous beards protruding from between the tightly closed shells and then knock off any barnacles with a large knife. Give the mussels another quick rinse to remove any little pieces of shell.
3. In a very large pan (ideally big enough to take all the mussels and only be half full), gently fry the garlic and shallots in the butter with the bouquet garni. Cook over a low heat until the shallots are soft and translucent.
4. Add the mussels and wine (or cider). Turn up the heat, then cover with a lid and steam for 3–4 minutes. Give the pan a good shake every now and then. The mussels should open, discard any that stay closed.
5. Remove the bouquet garni. Add the cream and chopped parsley and remove from the heat.
6. Spoon into four large warmed bowls and serve with lots of crusty bread for mopping up the delicious sauce.

Beccles u3a Scottish Country Dancing group leader Jo shares how a recent visit from the u3a Subject Adviser brought dancers together to share knowledge, learn new dances and build connections.

I'm the Convenor for Beccles u3a's Scottish Country Dancing group. I am always on the look out for different ways to share my love of Scottish Country Dancing with other u3a members. Some time ago I saw an article in u3a Matters written by Sue, the National u3a Adviser for Scottish Country Dancing. Our group decided that we’d love Sue to come and visit us.

Fast forward several months and Sue, along with her husband Chris, came to Beccles. This was a fantastic opportunity to share ideas, to learn, and to make connections with the wider u3a community.

Learning together on the dancefloor

We began the session with our usual warm up routine, which Sue and Chris joined in. After this I led a two couple round the room dance called Highland Welcome, that our newer members had recently learnt. We then revised a longways dance called Great Expectations. I felt a little nervous to begin with because I wasn't used to being watched when I led, but once the dancing began I relaxed. Sharing knowledge helps build to confidence!

The Beccles Fishing Reel

The more experienced group members were keen to demonstrate a dance they had devised to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Beccles u3a. It is called The Beccles Fishing Reel. Sue and Chris watched a demonstration and then joined in. Sarah was one of the members who took part in the dance and said, “Sue was genuinely interested in our 10th Anniversary Dance and it meant a lot that she wanted to dance it with us.

Members dancing the Beccles Fishing Reel

New challenges, new skills

After our refreshment break, providing time to chat, relax and socialise, Sue taught us how to dance the Highland Rambler. It's a popular dance but it has a few challenging moments, so it was very helpful to observe Sue leading it. We finished with Circassian Circle which we love to dance, and a few cool down stretches.

Sue was very supportive and warmly encouraged everyone. For me, as convenor, I appreciated her tips on how to lead dances. We hope this connection with Sue will lead to new connections between us and other u3a Scottish Country Dancing groups.

Beccles u3a Scottish Dancing group with Subject Adviser Sue

Strengthening the u3a community

Our group really appreciated the chance to meet Sue, learn some new steps and share what they have been working on. Lizzie says, “ We enjoyed her leading us in a dance and having the opportunity to show them some of ours. A good time was had by all.”

After the visit Sue said “I thoroughly enjoyed my recent visit to the Beccles u3a Scottish Dancing Group. Their warmth, and enthusiasm for the dancing, made the session a real pleasure. It was inspiring to see such a strong sense of community within the group."

u3a Festival 26 is the biggest event in the u3a calendar, bringing members from across the UK together for three days of fun, learning and skill sharing.

Between 1-3 July 2026, the University of York will be taken over by u3a members socialising and learning together.

u3a Festival 26 is being led by a team of members, crafting a programme that covers sport tournaments, artistic workshops, musical performances and talks on a wide range of subjects. It will be everything members do at u3a on a daily basis - on a larger scale. We talked to a few of the members organising the Festival about what attendees can expect.

Barnsley u3a's Choir, performing at u3a Festival 24

A broad range of musical talent

Music lovers will be well served at the Festival with opportunities to take part in instrumental workshops. In addition, musical groups from across u3a will be showcasing their skills in live performances.

Prudhoe u3a member Robert is helping to pull together the music programme. He says, "There will be some marvellous music. We already have contributions from piano, saxophone, recorders, ukeleles and steel drums. The music ranges from Bach to Beatles - and its all live!"

Performing arts

One of the great things about the festival is the opportunity to get out of your comfort zone and try something a little bit different. Gloucester u3a member Sarah is coordinating a range of performing arts activities. She says "The Festival is shaping up to include an exciting variety of performing arts workshops - from laughter yoga to handbell ringing, via a jazz workshop and all kinds of dance that you can join in. "

Sports for every member

The sports programme is being organised by Rippon u3a member Glenys, who also coordinated the sports programme at u3a Festival 24. Reflecting the wide range of sporting activity within u3a, there will be sports tournaments for the competitive types and fitness workshops for people who want to move their body in a gentler way.

Croquet was one of the popular sports at u3a Festival 24 and will be returning at this year's Festival

Glenys says, "u3a sports and activity groups focus on enjoyment, inclusivity, and active, lifelong participation rather than competition or high-level performance. The range of sports activities at the Festival showcase that later life is a time of possibility, growth, and physical engagement."

Opportunities to volunteer

As with everything in u3a, the success of the Festival relies on the talents of our members. If you think you could lead an activity, perform at the Festival or contribute in some other way, please get in touch by emailing festival@u3a.org.uk.

Woking Area u3a member Janet has been named the winner of the 2025/26 u3a Short Story Competition at a virtual awards ceremony.

Now in its sixth year, the annual competition attracted a record 520 entries on the theme Lost and Found. A panel of 70 u3a members assessed the stories on premise, structure and quality of writing.

The fourteen shortlisted writers were invited to a virtual awards ceremony where the three winning stories were announced and read out. The event was attended by Bloomsbury writer Sara Grant, who had been part of the judging panel.

At the event she said, "It’s inspiring and a privilege to read fresh, original work from aspiring writers. Short stories may be short on words but they’re not short on impact. These stories have stayed with me.”

She continued “How incredible to see the three little words, ‘Lost and Found’ and the journeys it has inspired in writers. We had a wide, diverse range of stories and there was something to admire in every story. There is so much promising talent in this virtual space.”

And the winner is...

Woking Area u3a member Janet (pictured, right) was announced as the winner of the competition with her story, ‘The woman in the tree walk’. The story is set in a dystopian world where trees are kept behind museum walls and every individual is subject to closely monitored rules.

The winner of the u3a Short Story Competition; Woking Area u3a member Janet.

Speaking about the story, judge Sara Grant said, “The vision of the future is almost too convincing. To deftly show a writer a dystopian world in so few words is no mean feat. This is an excellent example of how to write a short story."

Hartley Wintney & District u3a member Sarah (left) came second in the competition while Guernsey u3a membr Christina (right) came in third place.

The runners up...

Hartley Wintney & District u3a member Sarah (pictured, left) came in second place with her story, “Finding the key to lost memories”. The reader follows a man in an unfamiliar room, piecing together clues to uncover the meaning of the objects inside.

Christina from Guernsey u3a (pictured above, right) came in third place with her story ‘Little boy lost’. Set in Africa during a period of unrest., a woman searches for her missing son.

"What an amazing competition"

The stories were each read out in the awards ceremony, followed by some short words from Vice Chair of the Third Age Trust, Sheila Crawley. She said, “What an amazing competition. National competitions like this are very special in u3a. They’re an opportunity to bring us all together to shine an incredible light on the skills within u3a and to celebrate what our members can do. It’s quite a thing of trust to commit your story to a competition like this and have it scrutinized by so many people. You’ve reminded us of how much talent there is on show within u3a.”

John, who leads u3a mindfulness and meditation events, and Yoga Subject Adviser Patricia and Tai Chi Subject Adviser Peter all share advice on rethinking stressful situations and bringing more mindful approaches into everyday life.

You don't need to join a gym or start meditating everyday to make a difference to your wellbeing: you can start with little changes to the way you think and building positive practices into your everyday life.

A new way of thinking

The two darts model of thinking is a way to react differently when something bad happens.

It can be thought of like this:

Something unpleasant happens to you. It might be an unpleasant text or email, or your bus being late, or receiving bad news about a medical condition. This is the first dart. You have to accept it because it has happened.

But what we often do is then fire a second dart ourselves. We ruminate for hours about how awful the text/email was. We feel more and more tense as we wait at the bus stop. We think the worst about the medical news we have received.

We may not even realise that there are two separate things – two separate darts – involved. But we can try to separate them and then choose not to fire the second dart.

If we can change the way we think when we receive bad news, we can minimise the impact it has on us.

John, who leads the national online u3a mindfulness and meditation events

Make small changes

If you're thinking of making changes to your lifestyle, perhaps by prioritising wellbeing and fitness remember real change doesn’t come from doing everything at once. Little changes can have big results.

Commit to one daily habit instead. It's more likely to stick if it's something you enjoy - a 20 minute walk, a few stretches at the end of the day or a simple breathing practice and relaxation. Practice your new habit for 21 days and observe the effects.

Patricia, u3a Subject Adviser for Yoga

A man doing tai chi

You could also choose just one simple Tai Chi or Qi Gong movement and practise it for a few minutes each day. Don’t aim for perfection; aim for consistency. Each time you return to your practice, you’re inviting calm, balance, and steady energy. Make a start, keep it gentle, and let regular practice become your quiet anchor through the year.

Peter, u3a Subject Adviser for Tai Chi

Where to start?

• Begin by exploring the groups at your local u3a. You may already have access to yoga, tai chi, or mindfulness and meditation - a relaxed, low-pressure way to try something new while supporting your wellbeing.
• If you’re curious about mindfulness, John, alongside colleagues Mike and Ruth, runs a series of online u3a Mindfulness and Meditation events, making it easy to get involved from anywhere. The next series is a six-week course, starting on Wednesday 25 February. Book now.
• Looking to start or develop a yoga group? Patricia is on hand to support both new and established groups, with practical guidance and resources available on the Yoga Subject Advice page.

Clive, Charnwood u3a member, is one of two runners taking part in the London Marathon this April to raise money for the Third Age Trust. He talks about what led to him taking on this challenge.

Learning new skills with u3a

Since I retired last year, I have been an active member of u3a. I have enjoyed meeting others in the monthly talks. These are on a wide variety of topics. I have also joined active groups such a badminton and pickleball, which are sports I never really had time to engage in whilst working, and I am enjoying the challenges of learning new skills from the group organisers and members as well as keeping active and healthy.

Giving something back

u3a means to me a new chapter in my life, which involves embracing new challenges and opening up to new opportunities. Giving something back to the community and service to the local town is important to me. I believe in promoting the values of u3a to anyone who is unfamiliar with the organisation and emphasising the benefits and advantages of making new friends, learning new skills and keeping active in in retirement.

I am running for u3a because I believe in the values of helping older people to network, keep active and prevent isolation and loneliness. As an active member for the last six months, I can see the immense benefits of joining a wide variety of groups and interests. It allows opportunities to pick up new skills and knowledge and create a sense of wellbeing and purpose in later life.

The journey has just begun…

Currently my training plan is just beginning as I embark on building a running schedule which includes 5 runs a week. Typically, I will run 30 miles in a variety of short or long runs and easy or faster runs. I have completed a number of marathons previously and I do not take for granted the enormous challenges each time you train for a marathon of 26 miles and 185 yards.

I have often heard experienced runners claim; the 26 miles is the not difficult. It is the last 185 yards that are painful.

Clive will be running the London Marathon along with Sheryl, whose mother is a member of West Bridgford u3a. You can support Clive and Sheryl with a donation.

Spaces Available – Egyptology

In this group we will journey through more than 5000 years, from the earliest settlements along the Nile to its apex in the New Kingdom, its conquest by foreign powers and its rise as a Greek-run powerhouse to the more 'recent' times when Egypt became a Roman province.

Along the way, we'll look at beliefs, technologies, society, art, and the evidence for the everyday life of ordinary people as well as the ruling elites. You will learn how archaeologists and Egyptologists piece together evidence, and how collecting evidence has changed over time. The impact of climate change and examples of how natural resources were managed will be a thread running throughout.

Sessions will comprise illustrated talks during which discussion and questions are welcomed, and members are all welcome to suggest specific topics that capture their individual interest. No prior knowledge is required – what matters most is curiosity and a willingness to join in and ask questions.

Great Group Leader

I would like to tell you how much I appreciate our Latin Group Leader Robert Hodge.⭐️🌟⭐️

I studied Latin when I was at school and enjoyed it but once I left school and joined the rat race of life and family I never really thought about it again. When I retired 2 years ago and was looking for activities and hobbies to take up I never dreamt that Latin would be one of them. I started the beginners class and never realised how much of my brain has lay dormant for over 50 years and how much pleasure I get when I can still remember a word or conjugation from then!

Robert runs several (many) classes tirelessly and just seems to enjoy sharing his knowledge of the ancient world and language with us.

Thank you so much. Please do not give up on us !!

Sandra, Subject Adviser for Spanish and member of West Wolds u3a, shares her top tips for starting a new language in later life, and why the New Year is the best time to start.

There’s something magical about the New Year. It’s a moment of pause when we can look ahead and ask ourselves what we’d like to explore next.

For many people, learning a new language sits high on that list. And for good reason. Picking up a language isn’t just an academic exercise, it’s a doorway to culture, connection, and joy.

I know many people find it daunting to know where to start. But I’ve found that it’s never too late to start learning a new language. I even started up an Italian group at my u3a without any knowledge of Italian! What matters is taking that first step.

New Year is a great opportunity to start, so here are some of the reasons I love language learning and some top tips as someone who has set up several language groups at my u3a.

New Year, new mindset

January brings a natural sense of renewal. We’re more open to forming habits, trying new things, and stepping outside our comfort zones. Language learning thrives on exactly that mindset.

A new language offers:

• A fresh challenge that keeps the mind active
• A sense of purpose and progress
• A playful way to stretch memory, creativity, and curiosity

And unlike many resolutions that fizzle out, language learning rewards even the smallest steps.

Members of West Wolds u3a Spanish Intermediates Plus group

Language learning is more than just words

It’s a common misconception that learning a language just means memorising lists and lists of vocabulary. But actually, learning a language offers a whole new way of seeing the world. You gain:

• Insight into other cultures’ food, traditions and stories
• Human connection and conversations with people you’d never otherwise meet
• Confidence from understanding something that once felt impossible

Start small

One of the biggest misconceptions is that you need hours each week to make progress. In reality, short, regular bursts of learning are far more effective. Try:

• 10 minutes of vocabulary over breakfast
• Listening to a short podcast while walking
• Watching a film or series with subtitles

Consistency is much more important than intensity!

A 'meet our Spanish group' display at a West Wolds u3a monthly meeting

Learn with friends

Learning is easier, and far more fun, when you’re not doing it alone. By joining a language group at your u3a, you have others around you to practice with and keep up motivation.

A supportive group, like your local u3a, offers:

• Encouragement and laughter
• A sense of belonging
• Real-life conversation practice

Chase curiosity, not perfection

The great thing about languages is that you don’t need perfect grammar to be understood. You don’t need to be “good at languages” or wait for the right moment – you just need to start.

I invite you to take this New Year as an opportunity to explore what doors a new language can open.

Choose a language that excites you – maybe you went on a recent trip to France and want to learn more. Or why not choose the language of your favourite cuisine? Staying curious will help you to enjoy the journey.

Learn a language with u3a

One of the joys of the u3a movement is the sheer variety of learning groups, and languages are among the most popular.

Across the UK, u3as offer an impressive range of language groups, from relaxed conversation circles to structured beginners’ classes.

The most popular languages are French, Spanish, German and Italian, but some u3as have language groups for Durch, Portuguese, Welsh, Russian, even Ancient Greek!

And if your u3a doesn’t have a language group, you can set up your own. You don’t need to be an expert to start a group – it’s all about learning together.

Where to start

• Find out what's available at your u3a: contact your local u3a to see what languages they offer or speak to a member of your u3a's committee.
• Discover other u3as in your area: if you can't find a group at your nearest u3a, don't worry, there may be another in your locality. Find your nearest u3as.
• Take advantage of online opportunities by joining Interest Groups Online. This online only u3a is an ideal way to access language groups not on offer at your local u3a.
• Speak to an expert: language Subject Advisers can help you start a group, find other courses and provide resources to help you on your journey.
