test u3acommunities.org & yunohost
One of my winter tasks is to find a new place for u3acommunities.org. Just completed a first pass :
- Use a #vps on #ovhcloud
- Installed (beta) #yunohost (yunohost.org)
- Added #wordpress and some admin apps
- Got #goaccess working for stats (forum.yunohost.org/t/goaccess-…)
- Got #anubis working for web protection (forum.yunohost.org/t/installin…)
- Figured out wordpress groups (forum.yunohost.org/t/how-to-ma…)
- Added backups with #restic (forum.yunohost.org/t/restic-re…)
Phew ... I am starting to like yunohost. I can see that once the intial effort has been put in to get the basics done, then additioanl apps are easy.
Thanks for @Elena Rossini 🌈 for the inspiration!

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today.
Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man. Just last month, on Sept. 14, he turned 90, on the same day Brad and I celebrated our 18th wedding anniversary. I will always treasure that he and I shared that date.
Walter was more than Chekov. He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend. To the fans who loved him for so many years, thank you. He loved you too.
Rest well, my dear friend. Keep navigating a steady course.

We absolutely do NOT need Starlink and reflecting mirrors in space.
But we damn well should be sending every Enterprise crew member out there in a modified photon torpedo case.

My sincerest condolences George. To some degree, we all know the loss of long term, close relationships.
I hope your unique proximity to him, during your work and friendship years, helps you get through this trying time. Please continue to 'come out swinging', when you justifiably take your place as a Fedi and Democracy ambassador.
Rest in peace, Walter.
he’s a legend. You all mean so much to so many. Walter Koenig’s fall in Star Trek IV scared the hell out of me. (I was young) I’ll celebrate him today.

Oh man, I am heartbroken to hear this sad news 💔😢 I was always a fan of Walter & Chekov ❤️
I've been a Trekkie most of my life & my family & I still enjoy rewatching #StarTrek TOS, we still get so much out of it.
I'm very sorry for the loss of your dear friend. Thank you for sharing these lovely memories of Walter ❤️
My heart goes out to you & to all of Walter's family, loved ones, friends & fans... 🙏✨

Wow, I'm probably the only one here who only realized from this post that George is a famous actor who enriched my childhood. A series that sparked my interest in science fiction, cosmology, and physics in general.
Losing old friends is painful. Don't let the grief get you down ...
Must say his death saddened me more than expected.
Best to his family and other loved ones.
A few years ago I read his book. While the Star Trek content was interesting, what I learned most from it is that being an actor is more of a struggle than those of us outside the industry realize. What also came through is Walter's uniquely understated sense of humor. It's certainly worth looking for at your public library or book store.
I’m very sorry for your loss.
I never had the pleasure of meeting him, but he sounded like a thoughtful, considerate and decent man by all accounts.
To all the Star Trek and Babylon 5 fans
RIP Koenig
- A wonderful human and talented actor. I especially loved him as Bester in Babylon 5.
A sad day, but hopefully a life fully lived, and definitely someone who worked to leave such a positive mark on so many.
May his soul travel im peace.
We called our first car Pavel and it still has a Chekov sticker on the left side.
Ruhe in Frieden Walter ❤️
My condolences for losing a friend. We will keep him in loving memory.
It is strange — even in that photo you posted, I still see him as "the young man”, even if he is/was much older than I am, and looks the part. It is a bit over 50 years ago that I watched Star Trek; it was broadcast in Germany in the early 70s as “Raumschiff Enterprise”. I was 9 years old then, and I was *fascinated*. That was a future so bright, so interesting, so hopeful.
Such a promise was not only in Star Trek, but everywhere. Progress in everything was apparent, but then it didn’t go much further. Our present is proof of that, and it does not inspire hope. Now, the Borg seem much more realistic long-term than a peaceful Federation of Planets.
Still I remember that hope you and Star Trek gave us fondly. We love you all!

The UK social media ban is coming.
That means every adult having to show their ID to get online.
Age verification puts privacy at risk. Curbs freedom of expression. And simply doesn't work to keep kids safe online.
The government needs to change course. But the clock is ticking.

“That means every adult having to show their ID to get online“ is quite obviously and provably wrong. It is, as you put it, a “social media ban”, not a requirement to show ID to get online.
Online and Social Media are not the same thing, one is a subset of the other.
This act will conveniently make Mastodon and other non-major platforms effectively illegal in the UK.
Only the big ones will have the resources to implement this..
To be clear: it is not the verification that puts privacy at risk, it is the implementation that does so.
It is one of the many side-effects of the UK's aversion to ID's and citizen registration.
If that would have existed (like in other countries), the government could have provided a public authentication and authorisation service (cf. the Belgian e-ID, or the Dutch Digid) which could do the verification, and only return yes/no, and no privacy sentitive data.

The AI Doc
I watched The AI Doc (netflix.com/title/82792555) on netflix last night. Lots of "big names" interviewed (imdb.com/title/tt39150120/full…) from the world of AI, both techies and leaders.
If you are interested in AI, well worth watching.
First part is very doom and gloom ... tech leader after tech leader say they think this will end badly but can't be stopped, but some optimism as well from some (we'll have unlimited free energy and no-one will need to work).
Finishes with there is a narrow window of hope where we have some sort of global treaty (something like en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_o… I suppose) thats stops the bad outcomes.

U3ACommunities Computing reshared this.
@Peter Lord I'm not on Netflix, so I can't watch that. However, my take is this ...
AI is a tool. A powerful tool. What happens in the future will depend on how we use it. Just like nuclear fission, we can build reactors to generate electricity or we can build bombs. If AI wipes out the human race it will be because we have misused it. And that will be our fault, not the technology's.
FWIW, I expect AI to bring great benefits in many areas and there will be some disasters along the way. The biggest problem is that we will voluntarily become dependent on it. We will trust it without thinking and suffer the consequences, good and bad. But that will be our fault. Unless a super-intelligent AI can show us how to live in peace and harmony and convince us to do just that, I see no hope for the human race.
U3ACommunities Computing reshared this.
Maybe on justwatch.com ?
What struck me is not so much the specific failure cases or problems, but that the tech leaders all seem to expect a huge society failure ... like they are on a runaway train with no way to stop it (if we slow down and do this properly the Chinese won't ... so we have to keep going as fast as we can).
Its not "Joe Public" opinions in the program, its the current leaders who know this stuff and are working as hard as possible on it.
The optimists in the program say it might be possible to turn the current "race to the bottom" (fastest company to deliver the best AI wins everywhere, regardless of quality/safeguards etc) into a "race to the top" (great tools to benefit everyone). I just don't see this happening in the current political climate.
My research over the last few years on generative AI has led me to a personal option that its interesting technology with some specific great uses, but I don't really want to use it ... too many downsides for me such as climate impact, AI slop, reducing your own thinking, dependencies, costs, ads, theft of training data etc etc.
But I'm wondering now if I'm not pessimistic enough (or, I suppose, being concerned about the wrong things).

- Probabally debian based with kvm (ie full control)
- Application management such as #yunohost (ie IP blocking, usage reporting, alerts, backups etc)
- #wordpress ... pretty light load though (might look for a wordpress alternative though)
- Sending emails to subscribers (approx 1,000) ... so needs static IPv4

Oddly, I suppose, whilst I give talks on how generative AI works, I've long since concluded that I just don't want to use it ... ie the cons far outweight the pros.
But this stance does leave me with an issue ... I can't draw to save my life but yet my slides do need some decent graphics from time-to-time.
Any advice / ideas how to bridge this gap ?
Take care,

I've stopped using Facebook and found that I'm surprised by many local events — they put it on Facebook and assume everyone will see it. Also many small local cafés, shops, etc. use their Facebook page to show opening times, unexpected closures etc. It can be really annoying when you follow a link given as a website and find it's a Facebook page.
Though I've stopped using Facebook I can't stop using Facebook messenger. A lot of our u3a groups, including the u3a committee, use it for discussion because "everyone has it".

Just about recovered from volunteering at #boomtown festival ... was a challenge in the heat, dust and so much walking !
Still, next week off to #shambala festival with #mycauseuk ... one of my favourites. I expect it will be writstbanding again (when everyone is happy to see you!). Hopefully not too much rain !
Hard work, but Its great to give back a little.

So AI gives us short term gains but longer term losses. Not surprised.
Using 30 months of panel data on 26,811 Chinese students in grades 7-12, it has been studied how generative AI affects homework productivity and learning.● X-Axis: Homework scores

AI usage
From by Daughter (not sure where the pic came from) ... feels about right though.

ADS-B
One thing I've been exploring recently is using software defined radio (#SDR) USB stick to receive aircraft info on 1090MHz. Works pretty well. Using #dump1090 and additional code to send to #homeassistant over #mqtt and I setup custom alerts.
Although quite a ways from heathrow, we do see an awful lot of aircraft over our house, including from the local airport.
I think I'll do a talk on @U3ACommunities Computing about this soon.
But I discovered you can also use dump1090 / ADS-B radar on your phone ! So I'll be taking the USB stick + phone to Bristol today to see what can be picked up from the #BalloonFestival
