Friendica & threads.net

@Friendica Support @Fedi.Tips

I noticed a couple of issues with the friendica and threads.net integration today.

  1. The firefox extention Facebook container gets in the way (reported issue)
  2. The user profile link fails (assuming the above plugin is disabled)

I found the firefox extention Firefox Multi-Account Containers can be used instead ... just that you need to train it to keep meta sites in a seperate container.

I also found that whilst the profile URL fails on friendica, the link under the Unfollow button does work.

(browser containers can be used to keep settings local to a container - eg avoid any cookies set by facebook pollute browsing other sites. Also useful to open different accounts with the same institition)

Had an immensely scary moment today.

My laptop's SSD failed outright. Totally gone. No reads whatsoever, ddrescue can't scrape it. The data partition is unreadable.

I don't have local backups for this machine. Panicking, I'm thinking I've lost 8 months worth of history and trying to frantically remember what was on the machine.

Then I remembered.. I set up a backup script! A small systemd service to periodically back up with Restic! I had set this up in 2022 and backed up everything under /home every few days or so.

Turns out it had just run today. Just before the explosion.

I find that impressive: a back up utility, set up and forgotten in 2022, saved my bacon in 2025. The Backblaze B2 storage costs me $3/month. I can't buy insurance that cheap.

Bravo, #restic developers. Really impressed. Thank you. 💜

u3a news

FYI, I've just created a #u3a news group (u3anews@u3a.social or u3a.social/profile/u3anews) on u3a.social that follows some u3a news sources I've found.

So if you follow u3anews@u3a.social on the #fediverse you'll get the u3a news in your timeline.

News sources includes -

  • u3a sources
  • u3a latest news
  • u3a learning news
  • u3a news
  • U3ACommunities

Let me know if you find any other public sources that could usefully be added here.

Just watched bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/n12t… ... made me doubly conviced it was a good move to create u3a.social #friendica #fediverse server for our little #u3a community ... lets hope it takes off.

October energy use

@Martin Lewis @Octopus Energy #solar #myenergi #OctopusEnergy #homeassistant

October numbers now in ... we've started to pay for electricity 🙁 .. ie import exceeds export.

Still, average per month for the last 12 months is -£2.42 ... so still earning money over the year. Gas usage is going up though 🙁

DNS failures

Looks like large parts of the internet are failing, seems to be DNS issues to me.

See isitdownrightnow.com/ downdetector.co.uk/ etc

I was trying to access natwest.com

in reply to Peter Lord

Looking better !

we did see, on the command line

nslookup www.natwest.com 8.8.8.8
Server: 8.8.8.8
Address:	8.8.8.8#53

** server can't find www.natwest.com: REFUSED

then

nslookup www.natwest.com 8.8.8.8
Server: 8.8.8.8
Address:	8.8.8.8#53

** server can't find www.natwest.com: SERVFAIL

now

nslookup www.natwest.com 8.8.8.8
Server: 8.8.8.8
Address:	8.8.8.8#53

Non-authoritative answer:
www.natwest.com	canonical name = natwest-sites-prod-12-gngthsapbygjb8g6.z01.azurefd.net.
natwest-sites-prod-12-gngthsapbygjb8g6.z01.azurefd.net	canonical name = mr-z01.tm-azurefd.net.
Name:	mr-z01.tm-azurefd.net
Address: 40.90.65.152

and, of course, we can see natwest uses azure.

Even so the https certificates arn't done yet

in reply to Peter Lord

www.natwest.com now back up. So over 2 hours down.

One thing I noticed is that www.natwest.com was pointing to a microsoft datacenter in Frankfurt, but now its Redmond (US west coast). So they've had to to some sort of failover.

Yes, very interesting article, but it leaves out the most important information. The machine was used to "compute the structure of a molecule". But I don't know what that phrase means. It also doesn't tell us which molecules were chosen (hydrogen?, deuterium?, something larger?), nor does it say what information was revealed that we couldn't get from NMR.

I know it's a newspaper aimed at the man in the street, but I wish they wouldn't throw out tantalising hints like this and then fail to provide enough depth to understand the significance of the experiment.

Diagram of u3a.social / friendica

In the new year I need to do a talk for new users of my new friendica instance u3a.social.

I need a fairly simple diagram to talk around showing a few different types of friends, groups and subscriptions (internal and external) so you can get a single view of your friends, discussions, news feeds etc.

Is this about right do you think ? Any ideas / suggestions ?

@Nick Couldry #u3a #friendica #Fediverse

Who to follow for u3a members ?

This is who I'm currently following related to u3a ... anyone got any other ideas ?

Plenty of other RSS/ATOM feeds on u3acommunities (for example u3acommunities.org/category/co… for computing followup posts).

Its a shame that www.u3a.org.uk don't have the ActivityPub plugin installed.

Any others ?

#u3a

u3a.social is alive !

After many presentations, lots of discussions and one survey the fediverse site u3a.social is now up and running !

  • Is open to u3a (and friends) members
  • Is running frendica 2024.12
  • Supports ActivityPub, OStatus, Diaspora, RSS/Atom feeds and AT protocols .. so plenty of ways to connect
  • Only a single server, but with nightly 3-2-1 backups
  • See u3a-social for the original idea, and u3a-social-update for the update
  • For any queries email admin@u3a.social
  • My personal fediverse account is plord@u3a.social and bluesky is @plord.u3a.social
  • A group created for U3ACommunities computing group at u3acommunitiescomputing@u3a.social ... to request to join just follow the group
  • Still a new site and I'm sure will need tweaking
  • I'll start planning a talk about how to use this stuff soon

Feel free to request your own account on the server or simply follow directly.
